Sea Gulls Pull Away From Mustangs Late

SALISBURY, Md. - Host Salisbury pulled away from Stevenson in the fourth quarter for a 69-54 non-conference women's basketball win Tuesday evening.

  • Stevenson (2-3) held an 11-7 lead at the 4:21 mark following a pair of free throws by reigning MAC Commonwealth Player of the Week Denia Campbell.
  • After Salisbury (4-1) scored the next four points to tie the game, Hannah Crist made two at the line to put the Mustangs up 13-11 with 3:31 on the clock.
  • The Sea Gulls used a 7-0 run to go up 18-13, but the Mustangs countered with six straight points of their own, with a pair of free throws by Brandi Hall putting the Mustangs back on top with 19 seconds left.
  • The lead changed hands two more times and a Hall basket as time expired put Stevenson on top 21-20 at the first intermission.

  • Salisbury held Stevenson to one basket over the first nine minutes and built a 33-23 lead following a three by Jada Welbon.
  • A pair of free throws by Olivia Coleman with 43 seconds left broke an over five-minute scoring drought for the Mustangs.
  • Yasmeen Nelson hit a three with 16 seconds left before halftime to pull Stevenson within five, 33-28, and went into the locker room down 35-28.

  • A 6-0 Mustang spurt to start the second half pulled the guests within a point on a pair of free throws by Coleman at the 8:29 mark.
  • A layup by Jonyae Curry with 2:50 left in the third tied the game 42-42.
  • The Mustangs tied the game three more times the rest of the period and went into the final frame down one, 49-48, after Curry hit a pair of free throws just before the end of the quarter.

  • A layup by Crist a minute in put the Mustangs up 50-49.
  • Salisbury used an 8-0 run to build a six-point cushion, 57-51, at the 5:32 mark.
  • Coleman converted a layup at 4:59 to stop the run.
  • The Sea Gulls closed the game by scoring the final 12 points to seal the victory.

  • Salisbury shot 47% from the floor while holding the Mustangs to 26% from the floor.
  • Stevenson stayed in the game at the free throw line, going 20-24 (83.3%), while the Sea Gulls were just 10-21 (47.6%) at the charity stripe.
  • Both teams grabbed 43 rebounds.
  • Curry led Stevenson with 12 points and seven rebounds, while Coleman finished with 11 points and eight boards.
  • Crist added nine points, while Hall and Campell each finished with six.

  • Stevenson is idle until Wednesday, November 28, when it opens MAC Commonwealth play with a game at Lebanon Valley.
  • The Mustangs return home against Lycoming on Saturday, December 1 for a 1 pm tip.
