Five Different Goal Scorers Highlight Mustangs Win Over King's

PITTSTON, Pa. - Stevenson men's ice hockey juniors Frank Pinho and Evan Williams, sophomore Oleg Potemkin and freshman Luke Benitez all netted their first career goals as the Mustangs posted a, 5-1, United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) and Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) victory over King's Saturday afternoon at Revolution Ice Centre.

  • The Mustangs (3-1-0, 2-1-0 UCHC) recorded the first two shots of the game, including a shot by freshman Jarrod Vroman just 37 seconds in, before King's responded with three consecutive shots in a 13-second span.
  • Stevenson got on the scoreboard at the 9:39 mark after four consecutive shots on net with the last shot by sophomore Carl Lyden getting past Jake Tugnutt. Sophomores Matt Cappucci and Aaron Murray were credited with the assists.
  • With 3:16 remaining in the period, Potemkin gave the visitors a 2-0 lead on assists from junior Nick Gray and freshman Chad Watt.
  • The Monarchs (0-6-0, 0-4-0 UCHC) earned the first power play of the game with 2:03 left in the opening frame but freshman Riley McVeigh saved all four shots.

  • Stevenson had its first power play attempt, 6:46 into the period, but the only shot by junior Dominic Brenza was saved by Tugnutt.
  • King's went on the power play at the 11:02 mark and needed 1:13 of the man advantage to get on the board as Luciano Bucci scored for the hosts.
  • The Mustangs responded with a power play goal of their own 2:01 later, as Benitez scored 42 seconds into the power play on assists from Watt and Vroman.
  • Williams netted his first career goal during four-on-four action on assists from junior Christian Ripley and Vroman for a 4-1 lead.

  • Just 1:44 into the period, the Mustangs went on the power play but did not record a shot on net.
  • After Stevenson killed off a penalty and McVeigh came up with three consecutive saves, Pinho scored to push the visitors lead to 5-1 with 7:24 remaining. Assists were credited to junior Chris Javens and Ripley.

  • Stevenson outshot King's, 43-28, while the Monarchs won 45 of the 76 face-offs.
  • Both teams finished 1-for-4 on the power play.
  • Watt finished with two assists, the first points of his career.

  • Stevenson returns to action on Friday, November 16 when the Mustangs host a UCHC and Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) contest versus Manhattanville. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
