Mustangs Unable To Hold Off Arcadia In Overtime

GLENSIDE, Pa. - The Stevenson field hockey team got an early second-half goal from senior Marissa Hoffman but it would not be enough as the host Arcadia University Knights got a pair of markers by Gabby Sedares including an overtime winner to upend the Mustangs 2-1 in MAC Commonwealth play on Saturday afternoon.

  • Arcadia (11-3, 4-0 MAC Commonwealth) recorded the first shot a little under two minutes in when a penalty corner inserted by Isabelle Houser landed on the stick of Sedares who knocked it over the head of junior keeper Kelsey Eure.
  • Stevenson (5-9, 1-3 MAC Commonwealth) then started to apply the pressure toward the Knights goal in the 4th-minute as shots from seniors Sara McVey, Ashley Meyer and Alexis Young caused Arcadia goalie Ashton Evans to make one save while the others were blocked.
  • McVey got free in the attack circle and ripped one at the cage that Evans turned away with 16 minutes gone.
  • The Mustangs kept up the attack in the 20th-minute as Hoffman had a try blocked by the Knights defense.  The rebound skipped out to Young who was unable to get a shot on target as well.
  • There was only one more shot the remainder of the half which came from Hoffman but it was wide of Evans sending the game to the break scoreless.
  • At the half Stevenson held a 7-2 shot advantage causing two saves from Evans.

  • The Mustangs struck 5:36 into the second frame after a penalty corner fed in from Meyer the ball found the stick of Hoffman who blasted it past Evans for a 1-0 lead.
  • Arcadia got their opening shot of the period five minutes later when off a corner Houser found Lauren Dougherty who had her offering blocked by the visiting defense.
  • The Knights got their equalizer at the 50:29 mark when a Houser corner came to Dougherty who passed to Sedares.  She knocked her shot past Eure to knot things at 1-1.
  • Just four-minutes later the Mustangs looked to reclaim the lead, but sophomore Brooke Morris was denined by Evans.
  • Each side would record a defensive save in the final ten minutes as junior Nikki Jones prevented a goal for Sedares and then at the other end with just 27-seconds remaining Sydney Cyr kept a shot by junior Emma Adams out of the net.

  • The game came to an end just 2:34 into the extra session as a Houser insert off a penalty corner came to Sedares whose shot beat Eure.

  • Stevenson outshot the Knights for the game 10-5, including 5-4 on goal.
  • The Mustangs also earned more penalty corners by a slim 10-9 count.
  • For Hoffman it was goal number two of the year and nine for her Stevenson career.
  • Eure had to make just two saves on the day.
  • It was the seventh time this season the Mustangs have had a game settled by just one goal unfortunately the hold a 1-6 record it those contests.
  • The are also 0-3 in overtime contests.

  • Stevenson returns to action next Wednesday, October 17 when they welcome the Hood College Blazers to Mustang Stadium for a 7pm start.
