Abdella, Walsh Net First Career Goals in Tie at Fredonia

Box Score

FREDONIA, N.Y. - Stevenson men's ice hockey sophomore Xavier Abdella and freshman Liam Walsh each scored their first career goal as the Mustangs skated to a 3-3 overtime non-conference tie versus Fredonia Friday evening at Steele Hall Ice Arena.

It is the third overtime game in three all-time meetings between the two teams while marking the third consecutive overtime game and fifth this season for the Mustangs (5-4-4). Stevenson is 3-3-5 in overtime games in program history.

After four-on-four play for four seconds early in the second period, Stevenson went on the power play for the first time in the game and needed just 32 seconds to find the back of the net as Walsh gave the visitors a 1-0 lead. Sophomore Jivan Sidhu fired a shot on net after receiving a pass from classmate Dominic Brenza before Walsh tapped in the puck on the open net with Anton Rosen out of the cage.

The goal snapped a streak of 21 failed power play attempts for the Mustangs. Meanwhile, Sidhu has a point in four of his last six games while Brenza picks up his eighth assist of the season.

The Blue Devils (7-5-2) responded 5:21 later as Todd Schauss scored on a rebound after a slapshot by Tommy Martyn. It is the fourth point for Schauss in three games versus the Mustangs. Fredonia took a 2-1 second intermission lead on a shorthanded goal by Ryan Dunn after intercepting a centering pass by the Mustangs from behind the net. It is the first shorthanded goal Stevenson has allowed this season after giving up six last season.

It didn't take long for the Mustangs to tie the game in the third period as Abdella fired in a shot from the blue line that got past Anton Rosen. After Abdella helped to keep the puck in the offensive zone, a shot rebounded out to the top of the zone to the sophomore defender who sent the puck to the back of the net.

Following a well executed breakout, freshman Carl Lyden collected his own rebound and skated behind the net before throwing the puck back towards the net where sophomore Nick Gray was there to poke in his second goal of the night. Brenza recorded the secondary assist marking his third multi-assist game of the season.

With 47 second left in regulation, the Blue Devils pulled Rosen for an extra skater. After winning the offensive zone face-off and with commotion in front of the net, the puck found its way to the stick of Jacob Haynes who eventually got the puck past the outstretched leg of senior Jacob Caffrey to tie the game with 19.7 seconds remaining and force overtime.

Both goalies kept the puck out of the back of the net in the extra period, as the visitors held a 4-3 advantage in the extra frame. Fredonia outshot the Mustangs, 50-29, marking the first time Stevenson has ever allowed 50 shots in a game. The Blue Devils also won 40 of the 69 face-offs.

Caffrey finished with a career-high 47 saves, just two games after recording a then career-best 46 saves, marking the third time he has totaled at least 40 saves this season.

Stevenson and Fredonia conclude its two-game series on Saturday, January 6 with opening puck drop scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
