Slow Starts in Each Half Doom Mustangs

Box Score

OWINGS MILLS, Md. – Visiting Albright College placed all five starters in double figures as it used strong starts in each half en route to an 80-63 win over Stevenson University in MAC Commonwealth men's basketball Saturday afternoon at Owings Mills Gymnasium.

Albright (14-5, 7-4 MAC Commonwealth) was led by Brandon Lindsay's 19 points.  Dejaun Smith (11 points, 11 rebounds) and Fred Rowles (11 points, 10 rebounds) each registered double figures for the Lions.

Stevenson (10-10, 2-9 MAC Commonwealth) got 19 points and six rebounds from senior Danzel Wright.  Junior Johnny Rhodes was the other Mustang in double figures as he tallied 10 points.  Junior Jaylin Johnson added nine points, while freshman Kobe Colston recorded eight points, six rebounds and four assists.

Albright scored the game's first 15 points and held the Mustangs without a field goal for over seven minutes, with a basket at the 12:53 mark by Kyle Wooldridge making it 17-4.  Trailing 23-9, Stevenson used an 8-0 run to pull within six, 23-17, 4:36 before halftime on a pair of free throws by freshman Evan Joseph.  Stevenson got within four, 26-22, at the 2:16 mark on a conventional three-point play by Wright, but Albright went into the locker room holding a 29-22 advantage.

The Lions outscored the Mustangs 23-8 over the first six minutes of the second half to open up a 52-30 cushion on a Smith layup.  Stevenson scored five straight points to get the margin down to 17, and the lead fluctuated between 17 and 21 until a 5-0 Mustang spurt capped by a Wright three made it a 62-48 game with 5:22 on the clock.  Stevenson got the lead down to 13, 68-55, on a layup by Johnson with 3:30 left, but got no closer.

Albright shot 38% for the game but connected on 10 of its 27 three-point attempts, while Stevenson, which shot just 32%, was 3-28 behind the arc.  The two teams went to the free throw line a combined 60 times, with the Lions going 22-29 and the Mustangs 16-31.  The guests also held a 50-42 rebound advantage on the afternoon.

Stevenson is back in action Wednesday when it travels to Messiah for an 8:00 MAC Commonwealth contest.
