Mustangs Handle Hood for Third Straight Triumph

FREDERICK, Md. – The Stevenson University women's basketball program posted its third straight double-digit victory as it downed Hood 67-41 Wednesday night in MAC Commonwealth action at BB&T Arena.  The Mustangs (10-6, 5-3 MAC Commonwealth) picked up their third straight win.

Junior Jonyae Curry paced the Mustangs as she finished with 19 points on 9-15 shooting while also grabbing eight rebounds.  Senior Imani Sanders and freshmen Olivia Coleman and Kaeli Sutryk each finished with seven points, with Coleman grabbing 14 rebounds.  Senior Kristine Tennyson recorded six points, five assists and four boards while sophomore Hannah Crist chipped in with six points.  A total of 19 players saw the floor for Stevenson for the second straight game.

Hood (5-11, 1-7 MAC Commonwealth) was led by Mia Savoy's 14 points.

Stevenson trailed just once, at 2-0, and gradually pulled away to open up an 18-10 lead after one quarter.  The Mustangs opened up their largest lead of the first half, 29-17, on a pair of free throws by freshman Denia Campbell with 3:59 to go, and from their, neither team scored the remainder of the half.

The Mustangs opened the second half on a 15-2 run capped by a Coleman layup with 4:42 remaining in the third to open up a 44-19 lead.  Stevenson carried a 50-25 lead into the final frame and a Sutryk layup with just over four minutes remaining put the Mustangs on top 63-33, their largest lead of the contest.

Stevenson's defense forced Hood to commit 25 turnovers which led to a 20-5 lead for the Mustangs in points off turnovers, as Stevenson had just 12 giveaways.  Stevenson finished with 14 steals, with Sanders and Tennyson registering three apiece.  The Mustangs, who held a 57-42 rebound advantage, shot just 32.9%, but limited the Blazers to 24% shooting for the contest.

Stevenson returns to action Saturday afternoon when it hosts Arcadia in a 1:00 MAC Commonwealth contest at Owings Mills Gymnasium.
