Noel Martin Nets Two In Shutout Of St. Mary's

Box Score

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - The freshmen offensive flurry continued on Sunday morning as Noel Martin fired eight shots, including seven on goal, and scored her first and second career goals to pace the Stevenson field hockey team to a 3-0 win over St. Mary's (Md.) at Mustang Stadium.

The win for the Mustangs (2-0) was the second victory in a row over the Seahawks.  It was also the first time since 2014 that Stevenson has opened the season with back-to-back wins.

The visiting Seahawks (1-1) got off to a quick start as the team had a quality chance just three minuntes in but Mollie Benson's shot was stopped by Mustangs sophomore goalie Kelsey Eure The rebound bounced out to Courtney Mellon, but her attempt was cleared off the line by junior defenseman Marissa Hoffman to keep the game scoreless.

Sophomore Tanner Ridgely gave the home side its best opportunity early on, when her shot in the sixth minute trickled just to the left of the cage.  She had another chance a minute later, but the pass intended for her eluded the stick.

In the 18th minute, the Mustangs were awarded a penalty corner, but Hoffman's pass attempt got tangled in some sticks giving trouble to the Seahawks defense. The ball found the stick of freshman Brooke Morris who slipped one just wide of the net.

Just a minute later, sophomore Ashli Glatfelter made a great effort to keep the ball in play and found a cutting Morris who fed the ball ahead to Martin. Martin sent a back-handed rocket into the cage giving the Mustangs a 1-0 lead with 15:28 left in the opening half.

Stevenson had another great chance in the first 35 minutes but Morris was stopped in tight on a kick save by the visiting goalie Alyssa Thompson.

Mustangs backstop Eure was not busy in the first half but made a huge left pad stop in the 29th minute on the Seahawks Brooke Steinhoff.

A green card issued to the visitors Belson at 30:58 into half number one, put the hosts a player-up for two minutes and during that time, the home team made it 2-0. Ridgely caused a turnover and connected with Martin on a pass which she sent into the cage for her second of the day.

The two sides went into the half with that score line, with Stevenson holding a 6-4 edge in shots.

To start the second half, the hosts came out on fire as just 26 seconds in, Martin caused Thompson to make another tough kick save to keep the score at 2-0.

A home corner earned by Ridgley in the 42nd minute did not amount to much.  But the hosts kept up the pressure and were rewarded when junior Sara McVey blasted one into the net for her first of the season and 22nd as a Mustang, with 28:15 left to up the lead to 3-0.  That goal signaled the end of the day for Thompson who was replaced in net by Kelby Egerland.

After a caused turnover by junior Alexis Young, a shot from Martin tested Egerland who answered the call with a nice kick save in the 51st minute.  A penalty corner from Hoffman with 17:30 left hit Martin at the top of the shooting circle who forced another nice save out of Egerland.

The Mustangs had one more chance to get the fourth goal in the 66th, but the shot from Martin sailed high above Egerland and planted itself on the top of the cage.

Stevenson outshot the Seahawks for the game 16-4, including 10-0 in the second half.  The home side also held a significant edge in penalty corners, 8-2.

Stevenson hits the road for the first time this season on Wednesday, September 6 when the Mustangs travel to Salisbury to take on the second-ranked Sea Gulls.
