Women's Volleyball Sweeps Gallaudet for 16th Win

Box Score

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Visiting Stevenson University swept Gallaudet University 3-0 in non-conference women's volleyball Wednesday night at the Gallaudet Field House.  The Mustangs (16-1), who won their fourth straight, won by scores of 25-18, 25-18, 25-20.

Senior Annika Schwartz totaled 10 kills on .346 hitting while adding six digs.  She now has 1,356 kills and is 13 away from the program record of 1,369 set by Avery Gabbard.  Junior Moriah Savage hit at a .333 clip and had six kills and four blocks, while sophomore Katie Leftridge notched six kills and 10 digs.  Sophomore Caroline Dangel registered 14 assists and five digs, with classmate Emily Castro tallying 11 helpers to go along with her eight digs.  Senior Deanna Bradbury finished with 14 digs.

Gallaudet (7-9) was paced by Adele Daniels' nine kills and 10 digs.

Stevenson never trailed in the opening set as it scored seven of the first eight points of the match.  The Bison gradually chipped away and pulled within two, 19-17, following a Mustang attack error.  A Gallaudet attack error, followed by kills by senior Lauren Weaver and junior Chelsea Ireland, pushed Stevenson's lead to 22-17, and another Weaver kill closed out the set.

Gallaudet held a 10-9 lead in the second set before three straight Mustang points capped by a Savage kill gave the visitors a 12-10 lead.  The two teams traded the next nine points before four straight points for Stevenson gave it a 20-15 lead following a kill by Schwartz.  Junior Lauren Jan closed out the set with one of her two kills on the night.

The Mustangs fell behind 7-2 in the third and didn't take their first lead in the frame until they rattled off five straight points, taking advantage of a service error and three attack errors to go up 18-16.  The Bison rallied to tie the set 20-20 trying to force a fourth set, but Stevenson recorded the final five points of the evening and a Dangel ace followed by a Schwartz kill closed out the match.

Stevenson hit .258 on the night, including .412 in the middle set, while the Bison were held to .089 hitting.  The Mustangs also took advantage of 11 Gallaudet service errors and five ball handling errors by the hosts.

The Mustangs are back in action Saturday when they travel to Hood College to play a pair of MAC Commonwealth matches.  Stevenson squares off with Lycoming in a neutral site tilt at 11:00 am before facing the host Blazers at 3:00.
