OWINGS MILLS, Md. – The Stevenson University women's volleyball team posted a pair of 3-0 sweeps of Catholic and St. Mary's (Md.) in a trimatch at Owings Mills Gymnasium Saturday afternoon.
The Mustangs (14-1) downed Catholic (9-7) by scores of 25-21, 25-19, 25-14, then cruised past the Seahawks (3-9) 25-17, 25-17, 25-18. Stevenson improved its home win streak at Owings Mills Gymnasium to 12 and has won 25 of its last 26 home contests.
In the opener, Stevenson got 12 kills and eight digs from sophomore Katie Leftridge, while senior Annika Schwartz finished with eight kills and eight digs. Sophomore Victoria Prokic and junior Moriah Savage each added seven kills, with each adding a pair of blocks. Senior Lauren Weaver and junior Chelsea Ireland each tallied five blocks, while sophomore Caroline Dangel notched 23 assists and nine digs. Senior Deanna Bradbury recorded 20 digs.
Stevenson hit .236 as a team, including .300 in the final frame, while limiting the Cardinals to hitting at an .065 clip. The Mustangs finished with 11 blocks, matching its season high and recording the most in a three-set match since tallying 15 blocks against Gallaudet on October 29, 2010. The hosts also had a season-low two service errors, its lowest total in that category since September 9 of last season against Lynchburg.
A total of 15 players saw action against St. Mary's, with Schwartz and Savage leading the way with seven kills apiece, with Schwartz adding seven digs and five service aces. Ireland had six kills on nine attempts with no errors. Prokic notched five block assists, while freshman Sarah Riggin posted nine digs and Leftridge seven. Sophomore Julie Nightwine handed out 10 assists, with Dangel and sophomore Emily Castro adding nine and eight, respectively.
In the nightcap, Stevenson hit .185 as a unit while the Seahawks had 22 kills and 22 errors. The Mustangs posted 11 service aces, matching a season high, and also recorded eight blocks.
Stevenson returns to action Tuesday night when it travels to Arcadia for a 7:00 MAC Commonwealth contest.
