OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Nick Carrington converted a penalty kick with 4:03 remaining in the opening half to lift the visiting Sea Gulls over the Stevenson men's soccer team Wednesday evening at Mustang Stadium.
It was the first meeting between the former Capital Athletic Conference rivals since 2011, with the Mustangs (1-4-2) taking two of the previous four with one tie. The Sea Gulls, who lead the all-time series 9-2-1, were ranked in all four of those previous meetings.
All seven games for Stevenson have been decided by one goal or less, including two scoreless ties in the last four games. Meanwhile, senior goalkeeper Jake Brown has allowed just two goals over the last 446:59. He has faced 35 shots on goal during that stretch.
Salisbury (3-5) looked to go on the offensive right away, testing Brown in the opening 1:12. The visitors recorded five of the first six shots, including three shots on frame in the opening 10 minutes. The Mustangs defense tightened up after that, allowing just five shots throughout the remainder of the half.
The hosts recorded its first and only shot on net in the 26th minute as senior Scott Dorman sent a shot towards goal from outside the 18-yard box.
In the 41st minute, Dolph Hegewisch's header hit off the crossbar before Stevenson was whistled for a yellow card on a high clear on the clearance in the box. Carrington stepped up and beat Brown low on the penalty kick to give the Sea Gulls the lead.
After being outshot, 11-4 in the opening half, the hosts held a 5-4 edge in shots in the second half but none of them were on frame.
Stevenson returns to action on Saturday, September 23 when the Mustangs travel to Wilkes for a non-conference contest beginning at 3:30 p.m.
