Box Score 2 SELINSGROVE, Pa. – Stevenson University split a pair of non-conference women's volleyball matches on Saturday at the Hampton Inn River Hawk Classic. The Mustangs swept SUNY Brockport 3-0 (25-16, 25-20, 25-20) for their 12th straight win to open the season, then fell 3-0 (26-24, 25-21, 25-11) to No. 16 Carnegie Mellon in a battle of unbeaten in the second match of the day.
In the first set against the Tartans (11-0), Stevenson (12-1) trailed 15-10 but gradually chipped away and pulled within one, 19-18, after a Megan Hren service ace and two CMU errors. Carnegie Mellon responded by extending its lead to 23-19, but four straight points for the Mustangs capped by a service ace by senior Annika Schwartz tied the set 23-23. With the frame knotted at 24, a Lauren Mueller kill and a Moriah Savage attack error gave the Tartans a 1-0 lead.
Carnegie Mellon again jumped out early in the second set, going up 13-7 before the Mustangs went on a 5-2 run to pull within three, 15-12, on a kill by Chelsea Ireland. Stevenson cut the lead to three two more times before eventually getting within one, 19-18, and following a service error, tied the set on a Lauren Weaver kill and a Schwartz block. The set was tied 21-21 when CMU rattled off the final four points to go up 2-0. In the third, the Tartans scored 10 straight points to put the set away, going up 12-3.
Savage led the Mustangs with seven kills, while Schwartz tallied six kills, seven digs and three blocks. Weaver also had six kills, with sophomore Victoria Prokic adding five kills and three blocks. Sophomore Caroline Dangel totaled 13 assists and 15 digs, with classmate Julie Nightwine handing out 11 assists. Senior Deanna Bradbury finished with 13 digs.
Carnegie Mellon hit at least .282 in all three sets and hit .321 as a team on the afternoon, while the Mustangs hit .101 as a team, their lowest output of the season.
Against SUNY Brockport (6-6), Savage hit .571 with 13 kills and one error on 21 attempts. Schwartz tallied 11 kills and a pair of blocks, while sophomore Katie Leftridge added seven kills and seven digs. Dangel notched 11 assists and Nightwine nine, with Bradbury posting nine digs.
After getting early leads and cruising in the first two sets, in the third, the set was tied 20-20 before the Mustangs scored the final five points to put the match away. Savage had two kills in the run, including the match-ender.
Stevenson hit .300 or better in all three sets and hit .322 for the match while limiting Brockport to .143 hitting.
Savage and Schwartz were named to the All-Tournament Team.
Stevenson is idle until next Saturday when it returns home to host a tri-match with Catholic and St. Mary's (Md.). The Mustangs face the Cardinals at 1:00 and the Seahawks at 5:00 at Owings Mills Gymnasium.
