Hayes Nets 22 as Mustangs Suffer Setback to Widener

Box Score

OWINGS MILLS, Md. – Visiting Widener University placed five players in double figures as it recorded a 90-64 MAC Commonwealth men's basketball victory over Stevenson University at Owings Mills Gymnasium Saturday afternoon.

Widener (12-9, 6-6 MAC Commonwealth) was led by Sardayah Sambo and his 20 points on 8-10 shooting.  He now sits just five points shy of 1,000 for his career.  Nick Jackson finished with 15 points, while Sam Smith added 14 points and seven rebounds.

Stevenson (4-18, 2-11 MAC Commonwealth) got 22 points from freshman Cameron Hayes, one shy of his career high.  Junior Cliff Cornish was the other Mustang to finish in double figures as he went 6-8 from the floor and totaled 13 points and four assists.  Freshman Kyle Wooldridge knocked down a pair of three-pointers and finished with six points.

Stevenson held a 21-16 lead midway through the first half following a basket by freshman Ben Wiebusch before six straight points capped by a Sambo layup gave the Pride a 22-21 lead.  Hayes knocked down a three-pointer 6:45 before halftime to give the Mustangs a 24-22 lead, but the lead was short-lived, as Kendall Green responded with a trifecta for Widener on their next possession.

The Mustangs led 27-25 on a Hayes basket at the 5:08 mark before a 12-0 Widener run put the guests up 37-27 with 1:33 to go.  Sophomore Korey Hayman Jr. snapped the Stevenson scoring drought with 1:16 remaining to cut the lead to eight, but the Pride entered intermission with a 42-31 advantage.

A 8-4 run by Stevenson over the first 2:30 of the second half capped by a Hayes basket pulled the Mustangs within seven, 46-39, before the Pride responded with an 8-2 run of their own to build a 54-41 advantage with just under 15:30 to go.

The hosts chipped away and a steal and dunk by senior Michael Byrd with 12:11 remaining made it a 61-51 game.  Widener put the game away by outscoring Stevenson 12-2 over the next three and a half minutes to take a 73-53 lead with 8:32 left.  The Pride maintained at least a 16-point cushion the rest of the way.

Widener shot 63% in the second half and 59.3% for the game while holding the Mustangs to 41% shooting, including a 5-18 effort behind the arc, while the Pride knocked down nine of their 18 three-point attempts.  Widener also went 17-18 at the free throw line while the hosts were just 9-20 at the charity stripe.  The Pride also eked out a 31-30 rebounding advantage.

Stevenson returns to action Wednesday night when it travels to Hood College for an 8:00 MAC Commonwealth contest.
