OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Stevenson University trailed just once, at 3-2, as it cruised to a 76-51 non-conference men's basketball victory over Goucher College Wednesday evening at Owings Mills Gymnasium.
Stevenson (7-4) placed three players in double figures, led by senior Danzel Wright's 16 points and six rebounds. Junior Marcus Dentley was 5-7 from the floor, including 2-3 from behind the arc, and finished with 14 points, while sophomore Mark Terrell added 12 points and five rebounds off the bench. Classmate Kyle Wooldridge nailed three three-pointers in the game's opening minutes and finished with nine points.
Goucher (0-10) was led by Dwayne Morton's 15 points, while Jacob Smith added 13.
Wright got the Mustangs on the board and out to a 2-0 lead on the game's first possession, but Smith answered with a three to put the Gophers on top 3-2 50 seconds into the contest. Wooldridge's first three-pointer in a five-minute span came at the 17:47 mark and gave the hosts the lead for good, 5-3. Stevenson gradually pulled away and opened up a 27-13 lead at the 8:06 mark on a basket by freshman Kobe Colston. The Mustangs took their largest lead of the first half, 40-21, on a pair of Wright free throws 3:10 before intermission and took a 40-25 lead into the locker room.
A Dentley three 47 seconds into the second half put the Mustangs up 18, 43-23, and from there, the hosts maintained at least a 16-point cushion the rest of the way. Stevenson's largest lead, 76-47, came with 2:45 remaining as Terrell went 1-of-2 at the line.
Stevenson shot 38.7% for the game compared to Goucher's 43.8% effort, but the Mustangs took 27 more shots as it built a 19-5 advantage on the offensive glass and forced 23 Gopher turnovers while giving the ball away just nine times. The hosts had a commanding 26-4 advantage in points off turnovers and led 12-2 in second chance points. The Mustang reserves also outscored Goucher's 26-12. The home team was 10-13 from the free throw line and 8-33 from long range, while Goucher went 7-11 at the charity stripe and 2-10 behind the arc.
Stevenson is idle until next Friday, December 29, when it hosts the Buffalo Wild Wings Classic. The Mustangs face Medgar Evers in an 8:00 contest at Owings Mills Gymnasium, preceded by a 6:00 tilt between Penn State Abington and Merchant Marine.
