Third Period Lifts No. 3 Elmira Over Mustangs in UCHC Play

Box Score

ELMIRA, N.Y. - Stevenson women's ice hockey senior Allie Bruns scored her fifth career but third-ranked Elmira scored five times in the third period as the Soaring Eagles remained unbeaten on the year with a 7-1 United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) Friday evening at the Murray Athletic Center.

It was the third time in five games this season the Mustangs (0-4-1, 0-2-1 UCHC) have faced a top-three team after opening the season versus then No. 2 Adrian and No. 3 Norwich. Norwich is currently the top-ranked team in the nation while Adrian sits at No. 4.

The Soaring Eagles (4-0-0, 3-0-0 UCHC) outshot Stevenson, 17-6 in the opening period but only got one shot past junior goalie Caitie Darosa with 7:10 remaining. The Mustangs were whistled for the first penalty of the game prior to the goal but the penalty kill unit stood strong as Darosa saved both shots on net.

Elmira added a quick goal just 1:22 into the second period but the Mustangs would respond at the 8:29 mark as Bruns was credited with an unassisted tally. Bruns fired a shot that was saved by Kelcey Crawford before a Soaring Eagle defender hit the puck into the net. The senior class has accounted for all eight points this season.

The Mustangs had three power play opportunities in the second period but were only able to get one shot to Crawford. Elmira's defense had three blocked shots on the penalty kill.

Both teams recorded seven shots in the second period with both goalies totaling six saves.

The nation's best offense came alive in the third period, finding the net five times, including the final goal on the power play. Elmira, who outshot the Mustangs 22-7 in the final period, finished 1-for-2 on the power play.

Darosa finished with 32 saves before giving way to sophomore Annie Smyth-Hammond for the final 7:37. The Mustangs had 11 different players finish with a blocked shot for a total of 15, with senior Monica Pozuc recording a team-high three. Senior Natalie Rosendahl and sophomore Jordan Pirrello each had two.

Stevenson returns to action on Saturday, November 18 when the Mustangs and Elmira play the second of a two-game UCHC series. Puck drops at 3:00 p.m.
