Box Score REISTERSTOWN, Md. - Stevenson men's ice hockey junior Mike Davis scored the game-winning goal with just 15.6 seconds remaining in overtime as the Mustangs downed Fredonia, 5-4, Friday evening at Reisterstown Sportsplex.
The Mustangs (6-5-1) improved to 4-0-0 in one-goal games this season and 2-0-1 in overtime games. The win also snaps a three-game home losing streak as the team improves a perfect 3-0-0 when scoring five goals.
Just seven seconds after Stevenson killed off a man-down situation, junior Jordan Watt found the back of the net to give the hosts an early 1-0 lead just 4:39 into the contest. Davis and freshman Tyler Slusarczyk were credited with the assists.
Watt has scored a goal in three straight games and has four points during that stretch. Meanwhile, it is the first assist for Davis, who leads the team with nine, in the last five games.
The Blue Devils (4-7-1) knotted the game just 2:51 later before taking a 2-1 lead on a power-play goal with 2:35 remaining in the opening period. It was the sixth power-play opportunity for Fredonia, including a five-minute opportunity on a game-misconduct call against the hosts.
With 1:36 left in the opening frame, freshman Christian Ripley leveled the game back at 2-2 on an assist from classmate Austin Swingle.
Both teams scored one goal late in the second period, including a power-play strike by Davis. Fredonia answered with 21 seconds remaining in the period despite the Mustangs protest that a Blue Devil left the penalty box before the coincidental penalties had expired.
The third period saw both teams tally another, as the Mustangs goal came from freshman Troy Sutherland for his first career score.
In overtime, both team's had looks at net, but it wasn't until Davis received a pass behind the defense right at the blue line from Slusarczyk and scored on a wrister, one-on-one with goaltender Chris Paulin.
In his first career start, Pierce Dushenko finished with 38 saves.
Stevenson returns to action on Saturday, January 7 when the Mustangs host the second of a two-game non-conference series versus Fredonia. Opening puck drop is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
