Box Score ELMIRA, N.Y. - Stevenson men's ice hockey junior Mike Davis scored his third game-winning goal this season and second in overtime as the Mustangs posted a 4-3 ECAC West overtime victory over Elmira Friday evening at Murray Athletic Center.
With the win, the Mustangs (9-8-2, 4-4-1 ECAC West) snapped a three-gam losing streak and swept the season series versus the Soaring Eagles after defeating them by the same score line back in November.
The visitors scored twice in a 1:48 span in the opening 10 minutes of the first period, including the opening goal by junior Jordan Watt on assists from freshmen Austin Swingle and Evan Williams. It is the eighth game in the last 10 with a point for Watt.
Williams tallied his first career multi-point game with an assist on a goal by freshman Jake Lainesse to double Stevenson's lead. Freshman Troy Sutherland also picked up an assist on the score.
Elmira cut the Mustangs lead to one with a power-play goal with 5:14 remaining in the first period. It is the fourth consecutive game Stevenson has allowed a power-play goal and seventh of the last eight.
The Mustangs reclaimed their two-goal lead late in the second period on the first goal by Davis on assists by Swingle and freshman Christian Ripley. It is the third multi-goal game for Davis and second straight while the second multi-assist game for Swingle.
The Eagles answered with a second power-play strike with just 56 seconds left in the second period to head into the second intermission down, 3-2. With an extra skater late in the third period, Elmira tied the game at 3-3 with just 1:07 remaining in regulation.
With just under 15 seconds left in overtime, Swingle won a face-off in the Mustangs offensive zone. A slap shot by Watt from the blue line left a rebound attempt for Davis who finished on his second attempt to win with just 4.6 left with the visitors on a power-play.
Elmira outshot the Mustangs, 45-41 with the Eagles finishing 2-for-7 on the power-play. Stevenson was 1-for-4 on the player advantage.
Junior Jacob Caffrey finished with 42 saves, marking the third time he finished with at least 40.
Stevenson returns to action on Saturday, January 28 when the Mustangs face No. 5 Hobart in an ECAC West contest beginning at 7:00 p.m.
