Cornish Nets 22 in Men's Basketball Setback at Arcadia

GLENSIDE, Pa.– Stevenson University whittled a 15-point second-half deficit down to six, but ultimately fell 79-67 to Arcadia University in MAC Commonwealth men's basketball Saturday afternoon at Alumni Gymnasium.

Arcadia (9-9, 4-5 MAC Commonwealth) was led by Josh Scott's 28 points, while Phil Pierfy added 15.

Stevenson (3-15, 1-8 MAC Commonwealth) was led by junior Cliff Cornish, who finished 7-8 from the floor and totaled 22 points while grabbing six rebounds.  Freshmen Ben Wiebusch and Kyle Wooldridge added eight points apiece, along with sophomore Walt English.  The eight points marked a career high for English.  Wiebusch also handed out five assists.

The Mustangs trailed 43-34 at halftime and 59-44 with 10:24 left when a 9-0 Stevenson run capped by a layup by Wooldridge at the 8:32 mark cut the Arcadia advantage to six, 59-53.  Following a timeout, the Knights outscored the Mustangs 12-2 over a span of nearly four minutes to open up a 16-point cushion, 71-55, with 4:38 left.  Arcadia led by as many as 18 points down the stretch.

Stevenson and Arcadia traded the lead five times in the first half, with the guests taking a 19-18 lead on a three-pointer by freshman Mark Terrell with 12:34 to go in the first half.  The Knights used a 13-4 run to open up a 31-23 lead with 6:36 to go in the frame, and opened up their largest lead of the opening stanza, 37-25, 4:08 before intermission.  Stevenson did get the lead down to seven, 41-34, on a basket by Cornish 1:16 before the break, but went in to the locker room down 43-34.

Arcadia shot 53.1% in the first half and 46.9% for the game while the Mustangs shot 42.6% overall and 2-13 from behind the arc, while the hosts knocked down 4-12 from long range.  The Mustangs finished 13-14 (92.9%) from the free throw line, its best effort from the charity stripe since going 16-16 against Brooklyn on January 5, 2009.  Stevenson outrebounded the Knights 45-30, including 16-10 on the offensive glass, but the Mustangs were haunted by 28 turnovers that led to 34 Knight points.

Stevenson returns home Wednesday night when it hosts Lebanon Valley College in an 8:00 MAC Commonwealth contest at Owings Mills Gymnasium.
