Box Score OWINGS MILLS, Md. – Stevenson University junior outside hitter Annika Schwartz totaled 15 kills, including the 1,000th of her career, as the Mustangs swept Gallaudet University by a 3-0 score Thursday night in non-conference women's volleyball at Owings Mills Gymnasium. Stevenson (13-7) extended its win streak to four by scores of 25-17, 25-22, 25-19.
Schwartz needed eight kills for 1,000 coming into Thursday's match, and reached the milestone late in the second set. She hit .481 on the evening, with just a pair of errors on 27 attempts. Junior Lauren Weaver and sophomore Moriah Savage each finished with five kils, while junior Megan Hren had a team-high 11 digs. Freshman Julie Nightwine finished with 17 assists, while senior Sara Bollinger added 15.
Gallaudet (7-10) was led by Adele Daniels' 12 kills, while Darriyan Thomas added 11.
Stevenson clung to a 9-8 lead early in the first set before a 7-2 run gave the Mustangs a 16-10 lead following a kill by sophomore Chelsea Ireland. The Bison got no closer than four points the rest of the set, and a block by Ireland and Brooks closed out the set.
The 1,000th kill of Schwartz's career gave Stevenson a 22-17 lead in the second set. Gallaudet kept it close, pulling within two at 23-21 and 24-22, but Schwartz's 10th kill of the evening gave the Mustangs a 2-0 lead.
The Mustangs trailed 6-4 in the third when four straight points, all on Bison attack errors, gave the hosts an 8-6 lead. From there, Stevenson gradually opened it up, taking a 16-12 lead on a Schwartz service ace and taking a 21-15 lead on an attack error that was preceded by an ace by Brooks. A kill by Schwartz ended the match.
Stevenson hit .307 for the match, including .364 in the second set, while limiting the Bison to .117 hitting, including a -.033 effort in the final frame. The Mustangs finished with 10 service aces and five blocks, including three by Ireland.
Stevenson returns to action Saturday when it hosts a Middle Atlantic Conference crossover match, welcoming No. 13 Eastern and DeSales from the MAC Freedom as well as MAC Commonwealth rival Messiah. The Mustangs face Eastern at 10:00 am and DeSales at 4:00 at Owings Mills Gymnasium.
