Women's Volleyball Sweeps Arcadia

Box Score

OWINGS MILLS, Md. – Overcoming a slow start in the first set, the Stevenson University women's volleyball team swept Arcadia University 3-0 in MAC Commonwealth action Tuesday night at Owings Mills Gymnasium.  The set scores were 25-23, 25-18, 25-18.

Stevenson (12-7, 4-0 MAC Commonwealth) was paced by junior Annika Schwartz, who totaled 15 kills and seven digs.  She needs just eight kills for 1,000 in her career.  Sophomore Moriah Savage notched nine kills and hit .438 on the evening, while senior Kristen Brooks added six kills and six digs.  Junior Deanna Bradbury led Stevenson defensively with 16 digs, while senior Sara Bollinger handed out 19 assists and freshman Julie Nightwine 13.  Nightwine also had a career-best five service aces.

Arcadia (5-10, 1-3 MAC Commonwealth) was led by Shannon Ryan and MaKenna Micklus who posted five kills apiece.

Stevenson found itself down 15-11 in the first set before scoring the next four points to tie the frame 15-15 on a Savage kill.  The Mustangs took a 21-17 lead on back-to-back ball-handling errors by the Knights, but Arcadia ran off five straight points to take a 22-21 lead on a Kayla Resh service ace.  Following a service error, back-to-back Schwartz kills gave Stevenson a 24-22 lead, and after a Mustang service error, a kill by junior Lauren Weaver closed out the set.

The Mustangs never trailed in the second set, opening up a 17-8 lead following an Arcadia attack error.  Stevenson led 22-12 when the Knights made a late run to close within 24-18, but a kill by freshman Victoria Prokic closed out the match.  Stevenson hit .186 in the second set while holding the guests to -.026 hitting, with eight kills and nine errors on 39 attempts.

In the third set, Stevenson trailed 4-3 when it reeled off six straight points to build a 9-4 lead following a Nightwine ace and an Arcadia ball-handling error.  The Knights chipped away and got within two, 16-14, but four straight points capped by a Brooks kill put the hosts in front 20-14.  A service ace by freshman Darian Hileman closed out the match.

Stevenson hit .202 as a team while limiting the Knights to .071 hitting, including .000 over the final two sets.

Stevenson returns to action Thursday night when it hosts Gallaudet University in a 7:00 non-conference match at Owings Mills Gymnasium.
