Upset Falls Short as Mustangs Fall to No. 16 Rowan, 2-1

Box Score

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Stevenson field hockey sophomore Marissa Hoffman scored her first goal of the season to tie the game just 1:38 after Rowan went ahead 1-0, but the 16th-ranked Profs answered to escape with a 2-1 victory Tuesday evening at Mustang Stadium.

It was just the second time that Rowan, who has won six straight, was held scoreless in the opening half this season and the first time in four games they were held under three goals. Rowan also improves to 6-1 all-time in the series history that started in 2010.

The Profs (6-2) started out strong, recording nine of the 10 shots in the opening frame. The visitors outshot the Mustangs, 9-1 in the period while also holding a 7-0 advantage in penalty corners. Freshman Kelsey Eure recorded four of her five saves in the first half.

On the eighth penalty corner of the game for Rowan, a blast from outside of the circle found the stick of Casey Wagner who sent it to the back post for Nikki Kotelnicki to tap it in.

But the Mustangs (2-4) responded down the other end after Hoffman blasted one between the legs of goalkeeper Carly DeMarco off a penalty corner by sophomore Alexis Young.

After knotting the game at 1-1, Stevenson recorded the next four shots and had two penalty corners but the Mustangs could not find the back of the net as DeMarco recorded three saves. She finished the game with six.

Following another penalty corner by the Profs, Julie Johnson fired one at net that Eure knocked away but Rowan leading scorer Bridget Boyle were there to put it away on the rebound.

In the final second of the game, Young carried the ball up the left sideline before firing it towards the net but senior Holli Eppley could not connect on the other end as time expired.

The Mustangs outshot Rowan, 7-5 in the second half while holding a 3-2 edge in penalty corners.

Stevenson returns to action on Saturday, September 24 when the Mustangs open conference play on the road at No. 2 Messiah. Game time is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
