Box Score 1 NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Stevenson University women's volleyball team dropped a pair of matches at the Captains Classic at the Freeman Center Friday. The Mustangs dropped a five-set decision to UMass Boston, then fell 3-1 to the host and 11th-ranked Captains in the nightcap.
The set scores against UMass Boston (2-0) were 21-25, 25-23, 25-20, 20-25, 15-12. Against Christopher Newport (2-0), Stevenson (1-2) fell 24-26, 25-18, 25-20, 25-18.
Junior Annika Schwartz led Stevenson against the Beacons with 18 kills, while sophomore Moriah Savage added 10. Junior Lauren Weaver also finished with nine kills. Junior Deanna Bradbury led the Mustangs defensively with 33 digs, while Schwartz recorded 17 and senior Kristen Brooks 12. Freshman Julie Nightwine handed out 27 assists, with senior Sara Bollinger notching 24.
In the opener, UMass Boston hit .190 as a team while limiting Stevenson to hitting at a .119 clip.
Weaver and Schwartz led the way with nine kills apiece against Christopher Newport, while freshman Victoria Prokic notched eight. Bradbury finished with 22 digs, with Brooks and Schwartz notching 13 apiece. Nightwine had 18 assists, with Bollinger recording 11.
In the first set, Stevenson trailed 24-23 with Christopher Newport serving for set point when a Weaver kill tied the set. A CNU attack error followed by a Schwartz kill gave the Mustangs an early 1-0 lead.
Stevenson is in action two more times at the Captains Classic Saturday, facing Lawrence at 12:00 pm and Wisconsin-Platteville at 2:00.
