Box Score CHESTERTOWN, Md. - Stevenson field hockey sophomores Sara McVey and Alexis Young both scored goals as the Mustangs held off Washington (Md.) to secure their first win of the season Saturday afternoon at Roy Kirby Jr. Stadium.
The win was just the second for the Mustangs (1-2) in the 14-game series between the two schools. Stevenson posted its first win in the series in 2013.
Following three consecutive penalty corners by the Shorewomen (0-3), McVey scored her second goal of the season to give the visitors a 1-0 lead in the 16th minute. McVey broke down the left side before finishing with a shot to the near post.
Just 3:22 into the second half, Washington (Md.) knotted the game at 1-1 as Elizabeth Davis' penalty stroke was blasted below the right side of freshman goalkeeper Kelsey Eure. Eure picked up her first career victory after finishing with eight saves.
Young tallied her second goal of the season and her fourth career game-winning goal in the 52nd minute after the Shorewomen defender misplayed a place and Young beat goalkeeper Kerrigan Buck one-on-one.
Both senior Blair Bitner and sophomore Marissa Hoffman tallied defensive saves for the visitors.
Washington (Md.) held a slight edge in shots, 19-16 while the Mustangs had the advantage in penalty corners, 15-13.
Stevenson returns to action on Wednesday, September 14 when the Mustangs travel to local rival Goucher beginning at 7:00 p.m.
