Box Score OWINGS MILLS, Md.- Nine different players scored as the third-seeded Stevenson women's basketball team defeated sixth-seeded Neumann, 85-60 in the 2016 ECAC Division III South Women's Basketball quarterfinal on Wednesday at Owings Mills Gymnasium.
With the win, the Mustangs advance to the semifinal round on Saturday where they will face seventh-seeded Waynesburg at top-seeded Washington & Jefferson. The Yellow Jackets downed No. 2 seed McDaniel 78-73 on the road Wednesday night. The 85 points scored by the Mustangs are the second-most in program history, only behind the school-record 90 scored against Polytechnic on January 17, 2005.
Neumann (17-12) jumped out to a 3-2 lead just 1:12 into the game before Stevenson (15-10) forced five turnovers and scored 21 straight points. Six Mustangs recorded points during the run, including a pair of three pointers from senior Stephanie Martinez.
The Mustangs forced two more turnovers and held Neumann scoreless until 1:52 remaining in the period when Lauren Legler connected on a shot from the left corner. Legler hit her next shot, but three more Mustangs added layups, giving the hosts a 29-8 lead at the end of the first.
In the first quarter, Stevenson held a 13-5 advantage on the boards while totaling 16 points in the paint. The Mustangs held Neumann to just two points in the paint, with zero second chance points.
Freshman Jonyae Curry hit sophomore Kaitlyn VanTash on a pick and roll to open the second period and extend the hosts' lead to 22. Neumann scored five-straight points, but the Mustangs responded with layups from Tarbert and senior Caitlin Roy with 6:21 to play in the half.
Tarbert added nine points and recorded her 17th double-double of the season as Stevenson stretched their lead and closed the half with a 52-23 lead.
At the half, Stevenson totaled 30 points in the paint compared to just 12 for Neumann. The Mustangs also held a 24-11 advantage in rebounding.
AAliya Hayes and Legler combined for nine points as Neumann chipped away at Stevenon's lead and went on a 12-4 run to start the third period. Leading 56-35 with 5:20 to play, a layup from Tarbert sparked an 11-5 run to close the period. The run was highlighted by Roy's second three-pointer of the game and three free throws from junior Kameron Ward after a last second shooting foul. The hosts held a 69-40 advantage entering the final period, and maintained at least a 23-point lead the rest of the way.
The Mustangs led 47-33 in rebounding and 52-30 in points in the paint while shooting 64.5% from the floor in the first half and 52.3% for the game, while limiting the Kights to 34.8% shooting.
Tarbert finished with 26 points and 16 rebounds. Joining Tarbert in double figures, VanTash totaled 16 points and nine rebounds while Roy added 12. Freshman Armani Duckett-Mooney totaled a career high nine points off of 4-6 shooting.
