McNeal, Rhodes Set Season-Highs, Mustangs Fall to York (Pa.)

Box Score

YORK, Pa. - The Stevenson men's basketball team got within two points with 24 seconds remaining after being down by as many as 15, but that would be as close as the Mustangs would get as York (Pa.) held on for a 77-72 win Tuesday evening at Charles Wolf Gymnasium.

The Mustangs (1-9) received 32 points off the bench and 19 points off turnovers but a slow start to the second half lifted the Spartans (6-3) to their 16th win in the 20-game series. Stevenson, who dropped its sixth straight, is also winless on the road this season.

After falling behind 8-2 in the opening 3:31, the Mustangs were forced to call a timeout, which helped spark the defensive end to two turnover while holding the hosts to 1-for-4 from the floor over the next four minutes.

A three-pointer at the 10:49 mark by junior Tim McNeal started a 12-2 run for the visitors with eight of those points coming from McNeal. McNeal finished with a season-best 17 points, going 5-for-8 from the floor and 3-for-5 from beyond the arc.

Stevenson took its largest lead of the game at 28-22 following a layup by freshman Cameron Hayes but York (Pa.) went 6-for-6 from the free line over the final 1:32 to get within three at the break.

The Mustangs scored just 11 seconds into the second half on a layup by freshman Ben Wiebusch, but the Spartans scored 11 unanswered to take a six-point lead. A jumper by McNeal halted the run, but the hosts went on a 9-0 run to build a 51-38 lead.

A pair of free throws by Brad Wesner gave the Spartans their largest lead of the game at 15 but Stevenson went on an 8-0 run of its own to get back within seven. The Mustangs slowly cut into the lead and a layup by sophomore Walt English cut the deficit to two.

The Spartans however iced the game at the free throw line and finished the game 21-for-29.

Junior Johnny Rhodes finished with a career-best 13 points, going 4-for-5 from the field while also adding four rebounds.

Four of York's five starters finished in double figures, combining for 49 points, while the team finished with 10 three-pointers.

Stevenson returns to action on Thursday, December 29 when the Mustangs face Sewanee in the Holiday Inn Express and Suites Classic in Atlanta, Georgia. Tip-off is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
