Mustangs Fire on All Cylinders in 72-42 Win Over Arcadia

Box Score

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - All 12 Mustangs who suited up scored as the Stevenson women's basketball team defeated Arcadia, 72-42, on Saturday at Owings Mills Gymnasium.  The win was Stevenson's third straight and eighth straight against Arcadia dating back to the 2012-13 season.

Stevenson's 30-point margin of victory was its largest since a 69-36 win over Washington (Md.) College on November 19, 2014, while the 42 points allowed were the fewest since surrendering 38 to Lycoming in a 64-38 win on February 17, 2015.

Despite turning the ball over on four of its first five possessions, Stevenson (6-2, 3-1 MAC Commonwealth) was able to take a 4-2 lead after buckets from junior Imani Sanders and senior Niavanni Grantjust under four minutes into play.  After over two scoreless minutes, a technical foul called on Arcadia's bench swung the momentum to Stevenson.  Senior Sara Tarbert hit both free throws and a layup on the next possession to give the hosts an 8-2 advantage with 3:27 to play in the opening period.

The Knights (3-6, 0-3 MAC Commonwealth) hit a jumper, but senior Kameron Ward responded with an old fashioned three point play on the other end to extend Stevenson's lead.  A three pointer from freshman Hannah Crist and two free throws from Ward gave the Mustangs an 18-7 lead at the end of the quarter.

The Mustangs defense was stong as they kept the guests without a basket for almost six and a half minutes in the second period.  During the stretch, Stevenson forced a pair of shot clock violations and two blocks as they scored six unanswered points.

The Knights scored their only points of the quarter off of two three pointers from Maureen Fiocca, but Stevenson had four different scorers in the period as they held onto a 30-13 lead at the break.

Stevenson shot 40.7 percent from the floor while holding Arcadia to just 17.9 percent.  The Mustangs held a 27-9 advantage on the boards and a 16-0 advantage in second chance points.

The hosts picked up where they left off as they forced a 10 second call on Arcadia's first possession of the second half.  After another three pointer from Fiocca, junior Kaitlyn VanTash led Stevenson with five points as the team took a 9-2 run.

Trailing 43-18 with 3:16 to play in the third period, Arcadia forced a Mustang turnover that sparked a 6-0 run for the guests.  The teams traded points, but Stevenson held on to a 47-29 lead entering the final frame.

The Mustangs never let up in the fourth quarter as they maintained control and picked up their third straight victory.  The final period was highlighted by three pointers from junior Sara Downing and sophomore Montana Chance Herndon.  Freshman Mariama Keita also hit two free throws for her first career points.

Stevenson finished shooting 49.1 percent from the floor, while Arcadia shot 28.3 percent.  The Mustangs also controlled the boards, 50-17, including 14 offensive rebounds, and held a 25-1 advantage in second chance points.

Tarbert led Stevenson with 20 points, 11 rebounds and four assists for her eighth-straight double-double to open the season. Crist totaled nine points and Grant added eight.  Ward and VanTash each finished with seven points, while Ward grabbed 10 rebounds.

The Mustangs return to action Sunday, December 11 when they travel to former MAC Commonwealth opponent, Elizabethtown, beginning at 4:00 p.m.
