Watt Scores Overtime Winner, Mustangs Down Elmira for ECAC West Win

Box Score

REISTERSTOWN, Md. - Stevenson men's ice hockey junior Jordan Watt scored with 28 seconds remaining in overtime as the Mustangs defeated Elmira, 4-3 in the opening ECAC West contest for both teams Friday evening at Reisterstown Sportsplex.

The Mustangs (3-0, 1-0 ECAC West) have scored in eight out of 10 periods to start the season and have had 15 different players record a point. The team is also 2-0 when scoring first.

Despite the Soaring Eagles (0-3, 0-1 ECAC West) holding the momentum early in the opening period, the hosts were the first to get on the board as freshman Tyler Slusarczyk scored his third goal of the year. Freshmen Ian Malone and Evan Williams tallied their first career points with assists.

Just 1:58 later, freshman Austin Swingle doubled Stevenson's lead with his second of the season off assists from classmates Colton McMenamin and Mark Bowen. It was also the first career points for McMeniman and Bowen with the assists.

Midway through the second period, Elmira goalkeeper Sal Magliocco was credited with an unassisted tally to cut the visitors deficit to one. On a delayed penalty, junior goalkeeper Jacob Caffrey was skating off in favor of an extra skater but the Mustangs defense iced the puck back into the net. Magliocco was the last Soaring Eagle to touch the puck and was therefore credited with the score.

The Mustangs reclaimed their two-goal lead as freshman Christian Ripley scored with 34 seconds remaining in the second period off assist from junior Doug Rose and freshman Jake McNamara.

Elmira got back within one just 46 seconds into the third period as Blake O'Neill fired a shot from the blue line that went over the glove of Caffrey. The Soaring Eagles tied the game at 3-3 with 1:46 remaining in regulation.

In overtime, Watt was able to reach to tip a centering pass from freshman Dominic Brenza to keep Stevenson unbeaten on the year.

Caffrey finished with 39 saves while Magliocco totaled 26.

Elmira outshot the Mustangs, 42-30 while both teams finished 0-for-4 on the power play.

Stevenson concludes its opening four-game home stand as the Mustangs welcome fifth-ranked Hobart for an ECAC West contest beginning at 7:00 p.m.
