Men's Basketball Nearly Erases 18-Point Second Half Deficit, Falls to Albright 64-58

Box Score

OWINGS MILLS, Md. – The Stevenson University men's basketball team trailed 48-30 with just under 13 minutes to go, but rallied to make it a one possession game in the final minute before falling 64-58 to Albright College in MAC Commonwealth action Wednesday night at Owings Mills Gymnasium.

The Mustangs (1-4, 0-1 MAC Commonwealth), who trailed 32-23 at halftime, cut the lead to seven twice early in the second half, the second time a basket by Cameron Hayes at the 17:15 mark making it 36-29.  A 12-1 run by the Lions made it an 18-point game, 48-30, at the 12:37 mark.  Stevenson climbed back into the game by scoring 13 straight points, with back-to-back threes by junior Johnny Rhodes with 8:55 remaining and freshman Anwar Henson at the 8:28 mark making it a 48-43 contest.

Albright (3-2, 1-0 MAC Commonwealth) stopped the bleeding with seven straight points to reclaim a 55-43 lead at the 7:17 mark on an Omari Ringgold trifecta.  Stevenson chipped away, and a steal and layup by senior Michael Byrd with 3:11 to go pulled the hosts within six, 60-54.  The Mustangs made it a four-point game, 60-56, on a basket by freshman Ben Wiebusch with 2:34 left.

The Lions turned it over on two of their next three possessions and the Mustangs had three straight possessions to cut the lead to one score, but came up empty each time.  Stevenson fouled Albright's Fred Rowles with a minute to go, but Rowles missed the front end of the one-and-one, with Byrd grabbing the rebound.  A putback by junior Tim McNeal with 48.3 seconds to go cut the lead to two, 60-58.

Albright pushed their advantage back to four as Rowles converted a driving layup with 26.3 seconds left.  Stevenson turned it over on its next possession, and following a missed free throw, a layup by Ringgold with 11 seconds to go accounted for the final.

Stevenson held a 13-10 lead eight minutes into the game following a three by Wiebusch before an 11-0 spurt capped by a three by Damon Stern gave the Lions a 21-13 lead with 7:01 left before halftime.  Albright took its largest lead of the first half, 30-15, on a Ringgold three just past the four-minute mark.  Back-to-back threes by freshman Kyle Wooldridge pulled Stevenson within nine, 30-21, and the hosts entered the locker room trailing 32-23.

Albright shot 39.1% for the contest, including 43.8% in the second half, while limiting the Mustangs to 33.3% shooting after the hosts went 9-35 (25.7%) in the opening 20 minutes.  The Lions held a 45-41 rebounding advantage, including 11-9 on the offensive glass that led to a 14-4 edge in second chance points.

McNeal led Stevenson with 13 points and eight rebounds, while Wooldridge knocked down three three-pointers and finished with nine points.  Sophomore Korey Hayman Jr. added seven points.  Byrd finished with four points, six rebounds, five assists and four steals in 21 minutes of action, 14 of those minutes in the second half as Stevenson made its run.  Hayes notched six points, with Wiebusch and Rhodes adding five apiece.

DeJuan Smith led Albright with 18 points and nine rebounds, while Ringgold added 16 points.

Stevenson returns to action Saturday when it travels to Widener University for a 3:00 MAC Commonwealth game.
