Box Score OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Sam Scoma scored with 1:05 remaining in the second overtime as the Stevenson field hockey team dropped a heartbreaker in double overtime to MAC Commonwealth foe Widener on Senior Night Saturday evening at Mustang Stadium.
With the loss, the Mustangs (4-10, 1-5 MAC Commonwealth) are officially eliminated from playoff contention. It was also snapped a four-game win streak over Widener, with two of those wins coming in overtime.
Neither team could find the back of the net in the opening half as the two teams combined for just six shots, with the Pride (7-8, 2-4 MAC Commonwealth) recording four of them.
The Mustangs outshot Widener heavily in the second half, 11-1, including the 10th goal of the season by senior Rosemarie Neiva off a deflection from classmate Blair Bitner. But the Pride made their lone goal count as Eliza Newlin put away a loose ball in front.
Neiva has scored eight goals in her last four games while it is the first career point for Bitner.
In the first overtime period, Stevenson held a 5-1 advantage in shots, but Milayla Ninos stopped the two shots on frame.
The second overtime period belonged to Widener as they recorded all six shots, including the game-winner as Scoma finished a loose ball in front of the goal.
In pregame ceremonies, the team honored seniors Bitner, Neiva, Holli Eppley and Gabriella Brooks.
Stevenson returns to action on Tuesday, October 25 when the Mustangs host a non-conference contest versus Wilson beginning at 7:00 p.m.
