Strong Defensive Effort Lifts Women's Basketball to Second Straight Win

Box Score

OWINGS MILLS, Md. – Junior Sara Tarbert reached the 30-point plateau for the third time this season, totaling 30 points and 12 rebounds, as the Stevenson University women's basketball team posted a wire-to-wire 65-45 win over Arcadia University in MAC Commonwealth action at Owings Mills Gymnasium Saturday afternoon.

Tarbert finished 12-19 from the floor for Stevenson (6-6, 3-3 MAC Commonwealth), which won its second straight game.  She posted her sixth double-double in the last seven games and eighth of the season while also registering four steals.  Senior Stephanie Martinez and freshman Jonyae Curry each finished with nine points, with Martinez knocking down a trio of three-pointers and Curry finishing 3-4 from the floor and at the free throw line.

Valerie DiMuro was the lone player for Arcadia (7-7, 2-3 MAC Commonwealth) to finish in double figures, as she totaled 12 points and 14 rebounds.  Imani Alston and Olivia Roseman added nine and eight points, respectively.

Stevenson held the Knights scoreless for over five minutes to start the game, opening up a 15-0 lead before Dimuro got Arcadia on the board with a three at the 4:40 mark of the first quarter.  Arcadia cut the lead with eight, 17-9, with 1:24 to go, but back-to-back baskets by sophomore Kaitlyn VanTash and freshman Armani Duckett-Mooney gave the Mustangs a 21-9 lead after one quarter.

Six straight points to start the second quarter pushed the Mustang lead to 18, 27-9, on a pair of free throws by junior Kameron Ward at the 6:55 mark.  Arcadia chipped away and got the cushion down to 11 twice, but a fast break layup by Tarbert with seven seconds left in the frame gave Stevenson a 33-20 halftime advantage.

A Sammy Downham three capped a 7-0 Arcadia run midway through the third quarter to cut Stevenson's lead to five, 36-31, with 3:26 to go. Junior Haley Bauer responded with five straight points, nailing a three from the left corner with 3:06 to go followed by a layup with 2:25 to put the lead back at 10.  A three by Martinez as the shot clock expired with 1:29 to go capped an 8-0 Mustang run and made it 44-31, and the hosts carried a 44-33 lead into the fourth.

Stevenson held the Knights to just a pair of field goals over the first six minutes of the fourth quarter, outscoring the guests 12-5 to open up a 56-38 lead following a baseline jumper by Curry.  Arcadia scored the next seven points to whittle the lead down to 11 with 2:05 left, but got no closer as the Mustangs scored the game's final nine points.

The Mustangs matched their best shooting effort on the season, going 25-50 from the floor (50%) while going 4-11 from long range.  Stevenson also went to the free throw line eight more times, going 11-15 while the Knights went 4-7 at the charity stripe. Arcadia was limited to 27.7% shooting, marking the first time this season the Mustangs have held an opponent below 30% from the floor.  The guests did knock down five of their 13 three-point attempts, while Stevenson held a 38-36 rebounding advantage.

Stevenson is idle until next Saturday when it travels to Alvernia University for a 1:00 MAC Commonwealth contest.
