Mustangs Rally, Fall Short Against No. 22 Albright

Box Score

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - The Stevenson women's basketball team fell 63-61 to No. 22 Albright on a last second shot in a rematch of the 2015 MAC Commonwealth Championship title game on Saturday at Owings Mills Gymnasium.  The loss was the team's first home loss since February 18, 2014, with the loss snapping a 13-game home win streak.

Stevenson (4-5, 1-3 MAC Commonwealth) trailed 53-43 with just over eight minutes to go before the Mustangs embarked on a 13-3 run.  A forced turnover and layup by junior Niavanni Grant cut the deficit to two, 56-54 with 3:07 to go.  With 2:01 left in the game, sophomore Imani Sanders drove the lane and finished a layup, tying the game, 56-56.

Alysha Lofton put Albright (11-0, 3-0 MAC Commonwealth) back on top at the 1:41 mark before junior Sara Tarbert spun in a layup with 1:25 left to again tie the game. With 32 seconds left in regulation, Albright's Shannon Thomas made a layup to put the Lions up 60-58.

Stevenson came up empty on its next possession and was foreced to foul.  Albright missed both free throws, but a tieup on the rebound favorted the Lions on the possession arrow.  Nina Mazarelli made 1-of-2 at the line to make it 61-58.  Down three points, a rebound by senior Caitlin Roy on the second missed free throw gave the Mustangs possession with 10 seconds left to play before senior Stephanie Martinez hit an off-handed three-pointer to tie the game 61-61 with 4.5 seconds to go.  Coming out of a timeout, Albright's Shannon Thomas found Emily O'Donnell underneath all alone for the game-winning layup as time expired.

The Mustangs saw scoring from four different players in the opening quarter as they trailed Albright 14-9.  Albright's Kelecia Harris led the Lions with 10 points off of 4-4 shooting from the field and 2-2 from the line in the first frame.

Albright was able to score first in the second quarter before Roy connected with freshman Armani Duckett-Mooney for a layup and foul.  Duckett-Mooney completed the three-point play and brought the score within four, 16-12.

The hosts cut the deficit to just one point 21-20, after six straight points from Tarbert.  Albright pushed their lead back to three, but a jumper from junior Haley Bauer cut the deficit back to one again.  Albright responded with a 5-2 run, entering halftime with a 28-24 lead.

Both teams battled back and forth as the Mustangs chipped away at the Lions lead.  With 4:04 left in the third quarter, Tarbert sunk a three pointer, bringing the score to 39-38.  Another basket by Albright and a layup by sophomore Kaitlyn VanTash brought the hosts within one for the second time in the quarter and sixth in the game.

Albright closed the period on a 6-3 run as Stevenson entered the final period trailing 48-43.

Tarbert led Stevenson with 20 points and 11 rebounds for her sixth double-double of the season, while Martinez totaled 11 points and Roy added 10.

Albright shot 46.3% for the contest while holding Stevenson to 40.7% shooting, but the Lions went just 1-7 behind the arc and 12-26 at the free throw line.  The Mustangs were 4-19 from long range and converted 9-15 at the charity stripe.  The guests held a 41-32 rebounding advantage, but 22 Albright turnovers led to a 22-13 lead in points off turnovers for Stevenson.

The Mustangs return to action on Monday when they travel to FDU-Florham.  Game time is 5:00pm.
