Fisher Goes For 30 and 19 in Men's Hoop Setback

Box Score

OWINGS MILLS, Md. – Despite 30 points and 19 rebounds by senior Erik Fisher, the Stevenson University (4-9, 2-2 MAC) men's basketball team couldn't complete a late rally, falling 65-59 to Albright College (5-7, 2-1 MAC) in MAC Commonwealth action Saturday afternoon at Owings Mills Gymnasium.

Fisher totaled a season high in the scoring column on 13-22 shooting and finished two points shy of his career high of 32 set last season in the ECAC championship game.  His 19 rebounds are a career high, while Fisher posted his second straight double-double and fifth of the season.  Fisher also now sits 19 points away from 1,000 for his career.

Sophomore Sean Mayberry was the other Mustang in double figures, as he totaled 14 points on 7-13 shooting for the contest.  Seniors Christian Roberts and Joe Kiely added six points apiece.

DeJuan Smith led three Albright players in double figures with 18 points, while Omari Ringgold was 7-11 from the floor and finished with 17 points.  Evan Ward recorded 16 points and 15 rebounds.

Stevenson trailed by as many as 14 points in the second half and 60-51 with 3:33 remaining when it scored the game's next six points to make it a one-possession game 1:33 left.  Mayberry scored all six points in the run to make it 60-57.

Smith scored at the other end to make it 62-57 with 1:03 left, but another Mayberry basket with 47 seconds to go cut the lead back to three.  Smith missed with 19 seconds to go, but a putback by Ward pushed the lead back to five.  The Mustangs came up empty on the other end and Ward sank 1-of-2 at the line to account for the final.

Albright took its largest lead of the afternoon, 48-34, with 11:21 remaining on a Smith basket.  Fisher scored the game's next 10 points over a span of 1:56, with a three from the left wing pulling Stevenson within four, 48-44.  The Lions scored the next five points to make it 53-44 with 8:07 to go.

The Mustangs trailed 31-24 at halftime and cut the lead to five on a Kiely basket on the first possession of the second half.  Albright used a 9-4 spurt to open up a 40-30 lead with 15:46 to go and extended the run to 17-8 to open up its 14-point cushion.

Stevenson led 9-7 4:28 into the game following a basket by Mayberry, before the Lions held the hosts without a point for just over nine minutes as they opened up a 22-9 lead at the 8:20 mark on an Evan Ward three, capping a 15-0 run.  Fisher snapped the scoring Stevenson drought with a layup at the 6:30 mark that made it 22-11.  The Mustangs closed the half on an 8-4 run and trailed 31-24 at halftime.

Albright took seven more trips to the free throw line and was 11-16, while the Mustangs went 4-9 at the charity stripe.  Stevenson held a 39-34 rebounding advantage andshot 40.6% for the game and 3-13 behind the arc, while the Lions went 4-11 from long range and shot 43.9% overall.

Stevenson returns to action Wednesday evening when it travels to Lebanon Valley College for an 8:00 MAC Commonwealth contest.
