Box Score OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Stevenson men's soccer senior Logan McCarron scored his first career goal in the 119th minute as the Mustangs erased two deficits in a 3-2 double overtime victory versus Gwynedd Mercy Sunday afternoon at Mustang Stadium.
The Mustangs (1-2) dominated the score sheet, outshooting Gwynedd Mercy 36-7 and holding a 9-3 advantage in corner kicks. It is the fourth overtime win since the start of 2014, as the Mustangs are 4-0-2 in extra time since then.
The Griffins (1-2) got on the board first despite Stevenson maintaining most of the possession early in the first half. Rich Mychack successfully slid to block a clear attempt by junior goalie Michael Tringali for his second goal of the season.
Gwynedd Mercy nearly doubled its lead ten minutes later on a cross into the box, but Neil McGarry goal was called off due to offsides.
The Mustangs best scoring chance came in the 27th minute when a corner kick by freshman Iliyas Mirza found the head of sophomore Thomas Taylor. But the Griffins defense was able to clear it off the line after the ball got past goalie Matt Chilcote.
On its sixth shot of the second half, Stevenson tied the game at 1-1 as McCarron played a perfect through ball up the middle for classmate Zachary Martin who scored in his second-straight game.
McCarron nearly scored a goal of his own two minutes later, but his header off a free kick by Mirza was grabbed by Chilcote.
Sophomore Scott Dorman was inches away from giving the Stevenson the lead but his shot off a cross from sophomore Eric Dorsey hit of the post.
Saba scored the go ahead goal in the 87th minutes after collecting the ball on a clear attempts by the Mustangs defense. However, Dorman answered back as his one timer off a cross by Mirza ripped to the top left corner to re-level the game.
Stevenson dominated possession in the overtime period but Gwynedd Mercy's defense kept the game even at 2-2, as the Griffin's blocked seven shots, including Logan Welch who cleared the ball off the line.
Freshman Kevin Benitez found McCarron at the top of the box for the game-winner, giving the Mustangs their first win of the season.
Stevenson wraps up its three game home stand on Tuesday, September 8 when the Mustangs host Lancaster Bible beginning at 7:00 p.m.
