Eppley Scores Lone Goal as Mustangs Falls to Lynchburg, 2-1

LYNCHBURG, Va. - Stevenson field hockey junior Holli Eppley scored the Mustangs lone goal as Lynchburg held on for a 2-1 non-conference victory Saturday afternoon at Shellenberger Field.

The Mustangs (0-2) dominated Lynchburg statistically, outshooting the Hornets 20-4, including 13-2 in the second half, and holding a 9-3 advantage in penalty corners.

Kayla Copeman gave the hosts an early lead, just 4:11 into the contest, after getting past the Stevenson defense and finishing a one-on-one breakaway.

Following the goal, Stevenson outshot the Hornets 7-1 over the remainder of the first half but Beka Hess turned away all four shots on net.

Copeman doubled Lynchburg's lead 11:36 into the second half off of a cross by Nicole Simpao.

Eppley cut the Mustangs deficit to just one with 2:50 remaining in the game off her own rebound. Stevenson had an opportunity to tie the game in the final minutes after being awarded two penalty corners. But the team was not able to get off a shot.

The Mustangs outshot the Hornets 11-0 over the final 23:24 of the second half. Hess totaled seven saves during the period and finished the game with 11.

Stevenson returns to action on Sunday, September 6 when the Mustangs face Roanoke at Shellenberger Field on the campus of Lynchburg College. Game time is at 11:00 a.m.
