Box Score ARLINGTON, Va. - Highlighted by 14 kills by junior Kristen Brooks and eight kills and 15 digs by sophomore Annika Schwartz, the Stevenson women's volleyball team posted a straight-sets victory over former Capital Athletic Conference rival Marymount (Va.) Tuesday afternoon at Verizon Sports Arena.
The Mustangs (1-0), who posted a 25-22, 25-19, 26-24 win, are now a perfect 9-0 in season openers under head coach Dave Trumbo.
Stevenson jumped out to a 6-2 lead in the opening set before the Saints (0-1) rallied to tie the set at 11-11. The Mustangs however totaled three-straight kills to reclaim the lead. Marymount (Va.) cut its deficit to 23-22, but Schwartz and Brooks hit back-to-back kills to win the set. Brooks totaled five of her 14 kills in the opening set.
After falling behind 3-0 in the second set, Stevenson won nine of the next 12 points, including five-straight on the serve of sophomore Deanna Bradbury, to take a 9-6 lead. After Marymount (Va.) took a 14-13 lead, the Mustangs went on an 12-5 run to claim a two sets to none lead.
The two teams traded points early on in the third set, which featured nine ties. The Saints would take a 19-13 lead before the Mustangs would rally to get within one, 20-19, with senior Kelly McKenzie and sophomore Lauren Weaver combining for four kills during the stretch.
Facing two set points, Brooks and junior Kelsey Stave recorded back-to-back kills to tie the set at 24-24. The Mustangs would close out the match with an ace by junior Sara Bollinger and kill by Weaver.
Weaver and McKenzie each totaled seven kills while Bradbury registered 14 digs. Meanwhile, Bollinger finished with a career-high five kills to go along with 35 assists.
Marymount (Va.) was led by Emileigh Rettig who totaled 14 kills and 14 digs and Courtney Phung who finished with a game-high 17 digs.
Stevenson returns to action on Saturday, September 5 for the Haverford/Swarthmore Invitational. The Mustangs open with another CAC rival when they face Salisbury beginning at 1:00 p.m.
