Box Score OWINGS MILLS, Md. – Highlighted by 12 different scorers, including all eight seniors, the Stevenson women's basketball team extended its winning streak to 18 as the Mustangs defeated Hood, 85-58, in a Commonwealth Conference contest on Senior Day Saturday afternoon at Owings Mills Gymnasium.
The Mustangs (20-2, 14-0 MAC), who are ranked at No. 3 in the NCAA Division III Mid-Atlantic Region Poll, are unbeaten at home this season, winning all nine games by an average of 19.6 points. The team has not lost a home game since February 18, 2014 and have won 16 of its last 17 inside Owings Mills Gymansium.
The team's 85 points is the most in a game this season and ranks second all-time behind the 90 points scored by the 2004-05 team in a win versus Polytechnic.
Sophomore Sara Tarbert started out hot from the floor, connecting on her first four attempts, including two behind the arc. She totaled 10 points in the games first 2:44. As a team, the Mustangs opened the game on a 17-2 run going 7-for-7 from the field.
Stevenson's defense also made a strong statement in the opening half, limiting the Blazers (5-18, 3-11 MAC) to just six made field goals while forcing 15 turnovers leading to 13 points.
The Mustangs totaled 42 first half points to lead 42-21 at the break, the most points scored in the first half of a game this season. Stevenson also totaled 40 points in a win at Lycoming on January 17.
Senior Kayleigh Guzek continued her free throw streak, knocking down two from the line. A 92.2 percent free throw shooter this season, Guzek has not missed a free throw attempt since December 19.
Tarbert, who already holds the single season record with 81 steals, is eight points shy of breaking the record for points in a season. She currently ranks in the top two in a single season in eight different categories, including first with 167 made field goals.
Senior Ty Bender finished with a career-high 17 points while Tarbert and senior Kayla Kelly added 19 and 14, respectively. Meanwhile, senior Kyarra Harmon finished with eight points, eight rebounds and three assists.
Hood's leading scorer, Rachel Wiley, was held to seven points and seven rebounds after entering the game averaging a double double.
In pregame ceremonies, the Mustangs honored seniors Bender, Guzek, Harmon, Kelly, Kia Dawkins, Abbey DeFeo, Pee-Jay Gunn and Sabrina Vaitkevicius.
Stevenson returns to action on Tuesday, February 17 when the Mustangs host Lycoming in the regular season home finale. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
