Box Score READING, Pa. - Led by senior Kayleigh Guzek and sophomore Sara Tarbert, the Stevenson women's basketball team clinched the number one seed and home court advantage in the Commonwealth Conference Championship after the Mustangs posted a 62-45 victory at Alvernia Wednesday at the Physical Education Center.
Stevenson (19-2, 13-0 MAC), who has won 17-straight games and are ranked third in the NCAA Mid-Atlantic region, is one win shy of tying the program record for wins in a season. The team has not lost since November 25.
Stevenson got off to a fast start, scoring the game's first 14 points as the team went 7-for-9 from the floor over the first 4:40. However, the Mustangs went cold, converting just one of their next 18 attempts.
During that time, the Crusaders (7-15, 3-10 MAC) went on a 15-2 run to get within one, 16-15 with 8:16 remaining. The team was 7-for-10 from the field after starting the game 0-for-6 with three turnovers.
A three-point play by senior Kayla Kelly snapped a 5:36 scoreless streak before Guzek hit a three-pointer to stretch Stevenson's lead back to six. The Mustangs ended the half on a 7-2 run to lead 26-18 at the break.
The Mustangs extended their lead to 31-20 with 17:01 remaining in the second half as Alvernia would only get as close as eight the rest of the way while Stevenson led by as many as 18.
The Mustangs, who totaled 20 steals for the fourth time this season, scored 29 points off 29 Alvernia turnovers while outrebounding the Crusaders ,49-41.
Tarbert, who entered the week ranked eighth in Division III in steals per game, totaled six for the third-straight game to go along with 17 points, 11 rebounds and three blocks. She has 13 double doubles this season.
Guzek finished 7-for-12 from the field for 16 points while totaling two rebounds and one assist. She also added one block. Kelly also finished in double digits, scoring 10 points while totaling six rebounds, two steals and two assists.
Tyra Roberts led the Crusaders with a game-high 18 points and 17 rebounds while adding three blocks and two assists.
Stevenson returns to action on Saturday, February 14 when the Mustangs host Hood in a Commonwealth Conference contest on senior day. Tip-off is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. The team will honor Guzek, Kelly, Ty Bender, Kia Dawkins, Abbey DeFeo, Pee-Jay Gunn, Kyarra Harmon and Sabrina Vaitkevicius in pre-game ceremonies.
