Blackburn, Abbott Combine for Six Points, Mustangs Shutout Becker, 5-0

Box Score

REISTERSTOWN, Md. - Led by a combined six points from sophomore Chelsea Blackburn and senior Katie Abbott, the Stevenson women's ice hockey team posted a 5-0 Colonial Hockey Conference victory over Becker Sunday afternoon at Reisterstown Sportsplex.

The shutout was the first for the Mustangs (4-0, 2-0 CHC) this season and fifth in program history. It was also the 11th game the team has totaled at least five goals, nine of those coming a season ago. Stevenson is also unbeaten in its last six home games dating back to last season, going 5-0-1.

After failing to score in the first period for the first time in four games this season, Stevenson totaled three in the second, including the game-winner by sophomore Monica Pozuc 2:28 into the period. Blackburn and Abbott both picked up assists.

Blackburn scored an unassisted tally just 3:09 later to give the hosts a 2-0 advantage. Abbott then made it a three goal advantage with 0.6 seconds remaining in the second period after getting the puck past Madison Rigby on a scrum in front of the net.

Midway through the third period, Blackburn tallied her second goal of the game for her ninth career multi-goal game. She has five goals in her last two games. Senior Brooke Webber picked up her first point of the season with an assist while Abbott dished out her team leading fifth assist.

Late in the third period, the Mustangs had two players in the penalty box and were able to kill off two separate five-on-three situations. Stevenson, who is tied for the lead with eight other schools in penalty kill, is 14-for-14 on the penalty kill this season and has scored three shorthanded goals, a mark that ranks tied for first with No. 3 Elmira.

Senior McKenzie Taggart scored her first goal of the season and 25th of her career with 10 seconds remaining in the game, just as the power play expired. Classmate Jessie Capanelli was credited with the assist.

The Mustangs were 29-for-51 on face-offs, as senior Megan Alexander went 11-for-16 and Blackburn was 10-for-13. Sophomore Chelsea Ellis won five of her six opportunities.

Freshman Caitie Darosa earned the shutout in her first career start and finished with 10 saves.

Madison Rigsby led Becker (0-3, 0-2 CHC) with 30 saves, including 24 over the first two periods.

Stevenson continues its five-game home stand on Friday, November 13 when the Mustangs welcome Johnson & Wales to Reisterstown Sportsplex for a two-game Colonial Hockey Conference series. Puck drop is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
