Overtime Goal Lifts Alvernia Past Mustangs on Senior Night

Box Score

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - The Stevenson field hockey took the first three shots of overtime but it was Alvernia who scored in the sudden victory period as the Crusaders spoiled the Mustangs Senior Night with a 4-3 victory Saturday evening at Mustang Stadium.

The loss snaps a six-game winning streak for the Mustangs (10-8, 4-2 MAC Commonwealth) as the team remains in third place in the conference standings. Stevenson is a game ahead of fourth place Albright and a game behind second place Lebanon Valley.

Stevenson got on the board first with a goal by junior Rosemarie Neiva. Following a penalty corner by freshman Ashley Meyer, classmates Sara McVey and Marissa Hoffman recorded a double assist after Hoffman controlled the corner and McVey flicked it to Neiva on the back post.

The Crusaders (10-6, 3-3 MAC Commonwealth) scored back-to-back goals in a 2:05 period. Trailing 2-1, the Mustangs responded with two goals of their own, 3:47 apart, as Hoffman scored her third goal of the year on the fourth assist from freshman Katelyn Byram.

Freshman Alexis Young added her eight goal of the year after McVey sent a pass to Neiva who centered it for Young who deflected it past the goalie.

Alvernia tied the game in the 54th minute as leading scorer Maragert Wentzel fired a shot off an assist from Natalie Messaros who carried the ball into the circle.

With just over 10:00 remaining in the first overtime period, Wentzel's shot got past the goalkeeper but hit on the outside of the post. Less than a minute later, Melanie Lowry carried it 10 yards before finding Krall who deflected it past junior Kim Hahr for the game-winner.

The Mustangs outshot the Crusaders, 17-10, while holding a 16-5 advantage in penalty corners.

In pregame ceremonies, the team honored seniors Allie Goodwill and Meg Gill.

Stevenson returns to action on Tuesday, October 27 when the Mustangs host a MAC Commonwealth contest versus Lebanon Valley beginning at 7:00 p.m.
