Despite Large Shot Margin, Mustang Rally Falls Short in 2-1 Loss at Manhattanville

| Box Score 2

RYE, N.Y. - The Stevenson women's ice hockey team outshot Manhattanville 35-22, including 9-5 in the third period, but couldn't get the game-winner before the Valiants scored the game-winner with 4:45 left as they emerged with a 2-1 victory Tuesday at Playland Ice Casino.

The Mustangs (9-5) suffered their first loss in a game decided by one goal the season after winning the first four. The team is now 7-4 in one-goal games under head coach Tracy Johnson after going 3-3 last year.

Stevenson, who lost for just the second time in seven road games this season, outshot Manhattanville 13-6 in the first period, but could find the back of the net as the game went scoreless through the first 20 minutes.

The Mustangs also totaled 13 shots in the second period, but once again, Kirsten Shaughnessy stopped every single one while Scotia Bellavance scored her first career goal off an assist from Aubrey Bachand at 14:38 to give the Valiants a 1-0 lead at the second intermission.

Stevenson was finally able to break through on its fifth shot of the third period and 31st of the game when junior Brooke Webber scored for the second-straight game off assists from junior Jessie Capanelli and freshman Savannah Sommers just four minutes in.

The same trio combined for the game-winning goal against UMass Boston on Saturday to give the Mustangs the Codfish Bowl Cup.

Neither team was able to get the go-ahead goal over the next 11 minutes despite two power play opportunities. The two teams combined to go 0-for-7 with the man advantage.

However, Manhattanville (4-4-3), who had been idle since a 3-0 loss to Williams on December 7, got the game-winning goal from Sarah Sinning at 15:15 to improve the team's record to 4-1-1 at home this season.

Three of the Valiants' four losses and one tie have come against teams ranked in the top-6 in the USCHO.com Division III Women's Poll.

Stevenson thought it might have had the game-tying goal at the end of regulation after a faceoff win in the Manhattanville zone and ensuing shot by junior captain Tori Emoff led to a loose puck in the crease, but the officials waved it off.

The Mustangs travel to Castleton on Friday for the Rutland Herald Invitational. Puck drop is at 4:00 p.m.
