Box Score READING, Pa. - Stevenson women's basketball senior Kayla Kelly drove from the left wing and scored on a lay-up with just 2.9 seconds remaining to lift the Mustangs to a 57-55 Commonwealth Conference road victory over Albright Saturday at the Bollman Center.
The win extended the Stevenson (9-2, 3-0 MAC) win streak to seven and kept the Mustangs as the only unbeaten team atop the conference standings, half-a-game ahead of Messiah. The two teams meet on Wednesday at Owings Mills Gymnasium.
For the second-straight game, Stevenson jumped out to a 7-0 lead while holding the Lions scoreless for the first six-plus minutes until Jessica Venturelli hit two free throws with 13:51 remaining.
Albright did not make its first field goal until Morgan Harris made a lay-up with 12:42 to play. Junior Stephanie Martinez followed with a three-pointer just 16 seconds later to give the Mustangs their biggest lead of the game, 15-4.
However, the Lions (8-4, 2-1 MAC) went on a 20-7 run to take their first lead of the game at 24-22 with 4:04 left.
Led by four points from freshman Imani Sanders, Stevenson managed to take a 33-31 lead at the half which proved to be the winning margin of victory after both teams totaled 24 points in the second half.
Neither team led by more than three during a back-and-forth second half that featured three ties and five lead changes.
A jumper by sophomore leading scorer Sara Tarbert gave the Mustangs a 55-53 lead with 2:43 remaining before the two teams combined to go just 2-of-6 from the free throw line over the final 2:11. Albright's Jane Joyce and Emily O'Donnell each went 1-for-2 when the Lions had a chance to tie and take the lead, the latter of which came with 31 seconds left.
After O'Donnell made the second of two to tie the game at 55-55 with 31 seconds remaining, Stevenson called a timeout before Kelly won the game with her fourth field goal of the game.
Tarbert finished with 11 points, six below her average, while grabbing a game-high eight rebounds. Martinez scored a team-high 12 points off the bench while senior Kyarra Harmon totaled nine points and eight rebounds.
Shannon Thomas had a game-high 15 points for Albright. O'Donnell had nine points and seven rebounds while Joyce added eight points and seven rebounds.
Stevenson hosts Messiah on Wednesday. Tip-off is at 6:00 p.m.
