Fisher Scores 19, Strong Second Half Carries Mustangs Past Widener, 83-63

Box Score

CHESTER, Pa. - The Stevenson men's basketball team outscored host Widener 48-32 in the second half to turn a four-point halftime lead into a comfortable 83-63 road conference win Saturday afternoon at the Schwartz Athletic Center.

The win is the fourth-straight for Stevenson (13-5, 6-3 MAC) who is sole possession of second place in the Commonwealth Conference standings, half-a-game behind first-place Lycoming. The Mustangs are tied with Arcadia, but own the tiebreaker against the Knights.

Junior Erik Fisher led five players in double figures with 19 points to go along with five rebounds. Sophomore Darius Walker added 17 points while senior Colby Giacubeno hit 4-of-5 three-pointers to finish with 12 points.

The Mustangs were 10-for-18 from behind the arc, hitting 10 three-pointers for the second time this season. On the defensive end, they forced 13 turnovers and held Widener to 41.5 percent shooting to mitigate the Pride's 34-32 advantage on the boards.

The teams went back-and-forth in the opening minutes, trading the lead four times before Stevenson went on an 8-0 run, capped by a three from Giacubeno, to take a 17-9 lead with 11:29 left in the first half.

The Mustangs continued to build the lead and at the ten-minute mark pushed the advantage to double digits, 21-11, on a lay-up by junior Julian Davis.

Stevenson was able to maintain the lead through the late stages of the half until the Pride finished the half on a 7-1 run to trim the Mustangs' lead to 35-31 at the break.

Just over 30 seconds into the second half, Widener made it a one-possession game as Laron Byrd converted from close range. The hosts could not tie it up after a defensive stop and Stevenson junior Chris Day hit a three to put Stevenson up 38-33.

The Mustangs gradually built their lead from there with Walker hitting a lay-up with just under 15 minutes remaining to reinstate the team's double-digit cushion.

Junior Sean Farr helped the Mustangs pull away in the latter stages of the contest, converting a three-point play with 2:34 left before throwing down a dunk on his way to 11 points. Junior Christian Roberts scored 10 for his 14th double-digit game of the season.

The lead hit a game-high 22 points at 83-61 when Giacubeno hit his final three of the day with 1:26 left.

Widener (9-9, 2-7 MAC) dropped its seventh consecutive contest and fourth consecutive at home. Byrd matched Fisher with a game-high 19 points with David Nicholson scoring 16.

Stevenson returns home for back-to-back games at Owings Mills Gymnasium beginning with a Commonwealth Conference contest against Arcadia next Saturday, January 31.
