Wittman Scores Twice, Mustangs Fall to Holy Cross in Rutland Herald Championship

| Box Score 2

RUTLAND, Vt. - Stevenson women's ice hockey freshman Kellen Wittman scored the first two goals of her career on Saturday, but Holy Cross answered with two goals of its own, including the game-winner with 1:16 left in the third period to give the Crusaders a 3-2 victory in the title game of the Rutland Herald Invitational.

The Mustangs (10-6) dropped their second-straight game decided by one goal after starting the season with wins in the first four. The team is also 7-3 against opponents from the ECAC East this season.

Wittman, who led the women's soccer team this fall with nine goals and 22 points, was making her seventh appearance on the ice and scored two goals on her first three shots. For her efforts, she was named to the Rutland Herald Invitational All-Tournament Team.

Wittman was joined by freshman Chelsea Blackburn and junior Sarah Modzelewski. Blackburn totaled a goal and one assist in two games while Modzelewski had 57 saves, .934 saves percentage and a 2.00 goals against average.

The Crusaders (9-3-1) struck first at the 4:34 mark of the first period when Nicole Giannino fired a shot that was stopped by Modzelewki, before Lauren Abbenante was able to gather the puck and finish it top shelf.

However, Wittman tied the game at 1-1 with 2:34 remaining after receiving the puck at the point and skating past a defender to create a one-on-one opportunity. She then deked past Holy Cross' Alexandra Stevenson and scored on the backhand for her first career goal.

Less than five minutes into the second period, Wittman netted her second goal of the contest, corralling a rebound in front off assists from junior Madison Lange and freshman Chelsea Ellis.

The Mustangs looked primed to take their one-goal advantage into the second intermission, but a penalty at 16:36 led to a power play for the Crusaders who tied the game at 2-2 on Kara Violette's team-leading eighth goal of the season at 17:50.

After more than 18 minutes of scoreless play in the third, Holy Cross scored the game-winner, on a slapshot through traffic from the far point by Izzy Bagi.

Stevenson made 18 saves for the Crusaders while Modzelewski had 23.

Nicole Giannino was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player after totalling three points with one goal and two assists. Joining her on the all-tournament team were Bagi and Mackenzie Boardman.

Castleton's Rachel Bombardier rounded out the all-tournament team after scoring the game-winning goal in the team's 3-1 victory over Manhattanville Saturday.

Stevenson returns home from its 10-day road trip to host Neumann at Reisterstown Sportsplex on Tuesday beginning at 1:00 p.m.
