Harmon, Tarbert Lead Mustangs to Program Record Ninth-Straight Win

Box Score

OWINGS MILLS, Md. – Led by a career-high 21 points by senior Kyarra Harmon and the fifth 20-point performance by sophomore Sara Tarbert, the Stevenson women's basketball team posted a 65-47 Commonwealth Conference victory over Alvernia Saturday afternoon at Owings Mills Gymnasium.

The Mustangs (11-2, 5-0 MAC) are off to their best start in the programs 21-year history after winning their program record ninth-straight game. They are also unbeaten in five home games this season.

Led by five points from Tarbert, including her fourth three-pointer of the year, Stevenson used a 9-0 run to open the game while limiting the Crusaders offense to just one shot.

After the first made bucket by Alvernia (5-8, 1-4 MAC) at the 16:49 mark, the two teams combined to go scoreless for the next 4:06 before a three-pointer by junior Stephanie Martinez extended the Mustangs lead to 10.

A deep two by senior Kayleigh Guzek pushed Stevenson's lead to 18-5 but a three-pointer by Jenna Wolff cut Alvernia's deficit back to 10. However, that would be as close as the visitors would get as the Mustangs would hold at least a 10-point lead for the rest of the game.

Martinez would hit her second of three three-pointers in the game to push Stevenson's lead to 33-17 with 1:25 remaining in the half. The Mustangs finished the half shooting 41.2 percent from the field while connecting on three-of-eight from behind the arc.

Harmon scored 13 of her 21 points and gathered seven of her nine rebounds in the first half.

Stevenson would extend their lead to 20 after Tarbert and Harmon combined to score the first six points of the half. The Mustangs would hold their largest lead of the game at 50-29 following two made free throws by Tarbert midway through the half.

Tarbert finished with eight rebounds, three assists and one steal to go along with her 20 points while Harmon added two blocks, one assist and one steal. Joining the duo in double figures was Martinez who finished with 11 points on four-of-seven shooting.

Senior Ty Bender finished with a career-high eight assists to go along with seven rebounds, two steals and one block.

Stevie Fortna led Alvernia with 13 points while Jenna Wolff chipped in 10.

Stevenson hits the road for three of its next four games starting with a Commonwealth Conference contest at Hood on Wednesday, January 14. Game time is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
