Mustangs Drop Commonwealth Conference Conference Game Rematch, 66-54

Box Score

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Junior forward Erik Fisher recorded his first double-double of the season, scoring a team-high 19 points and grabbing 11 rebounds, but the Stevenson men's basketball team dropped its title-game rematch with Alvernia 66-54 Saturday in Commonwealth Conference action at Owings Mills Gymnasium.

The teams met on the same court back on March 1 in the Commonwealth Conference Championship game where the Crusaders edged the Mustangs on a last-second jumper.  Alvernia (6-6, 2-3 MAC) came out on top again on Saturday, sending Stevenson (9-5, 2-3 MAC) to its third-straight setback.

Fisher has paced the Mustangs during conference play this season, averaging 17.0 points per game, but it was not enough against Alvernia, despite shooting 8-for-15 from the floor.  Junior Christian Roberts also scored in double figures for the Mustangs, totaling ten points while hitting half of his shots.

Alvernia's Lamont Clark led all scorers with 23 points, while Harrison Deyo and Charles Cooper added 14 and 11 points, respectively, for the Crusaders.

Stevenson outrebounded the Crusaders, 38-27, but turned the ball over 21 times and shot just 39.3% in the second half after hitting half of their attempts (10-for-20) in the opening period.

The Mustangs jumped out with a hot start, hitting their first six shots, for a 16-11 lead eight minutes into the contest.  Fisher was pivotal in the early stages, connecting on his first four attempts, while also dishing out an assist.

After a miss late in the shot clock, Stevenson continued it torrid start with three straight makes, the last of which came from senior Colby Giacubeno who nailed a three from the wing to put the hosts up 21-13 with just under 11 minutes left in the first half and force an Alvernia timeout.

The visitors slowly chipped away at the lead in the closing stages and drew within one, 28-27, at the half as Alex Shippen hit a corner three as the clock expired.

Out of the break, Alvernia continued its run and took its first lead since early in the first half as Deyo laid in a bucket less than a minute into the period.  The Crusdaders' lead grew quickly to five, 33-28, less than three minutes in as Kirby Turner and Clark both converted from close range.

Eventually the Mustangs clawed back into the game thanks to Fisher and Roberts who drained a three from the top of the key with 11:05 left to knot the game at 39-39.  Minutes later Stevenson regained the lead as junior Chris Day and Giacubeno scored on back-to-back possessions for a 43-41 home advantage.

The teams traded the lead seven times in the game and it seesawed back-and-forth over the next four minutes until the Crusaders went on a 7-0 run capped by a three-pointer from Mike Miller for a 52-46 lead with 4:52 remaining.  A jumper from the free throw line by Giacubeno stemmed the tide, but a three-pointer and fast-break dunk increased the visitors' lead to nine at 57-48.

In the final minute, Stevenson could only climb within seven before Alvernia pulled away.

The Mustangs now hit the road for back-to-back conference road games, traveling to Frederick to take on Hood on Wednesday, Jan. 14 before heading up to Pennsylvania to play Lycoming next Saturday.
