Box Score OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Four different players scored a goal as the Stevenson field hockey posted a 4-1 victory over former CAC rival St. Mary's (Md.) en route to their third-straight victory Saturday evening at Mustang Stadium.
The Mustangs (5-1) are off to their best start in program history after starting the 2010 season 4-1. The win also improves Stevenson's all-time record to 10-11 versus the Seahawks.
After a scoreless first half which saw three total shots, sophomore Rosemarie Neiva blasted a shot off a touch pass from senior Caitlin Dempsey for her second goal of the season and her career.
Less than three minutes later, Olivia Edwards scored her team leading seventh goal of the year to tie the game for the Seahawks (3-2) on an assist from Emily Bishop off a penalty corner.
However, Stevenson would score three unanswered goals, including the game-winner by senior Alison Kagel on an assist from classmate Ariella Hopp. Hopp had a stick stop at the top of the arch following a penalty corner and found Kagel on the post. It is Kagel's seventh career game winner.
Dempsey scored her seventh goal of the season to increase the Mustang's lead to two following a scramble in front of the goal. Less than six minutes later, junior Rebecca Moreland scored her first of the year in similar fashion. Moreland, with her back to the goal, hit it backwards as it snuck passed the goalie just inside the post.
Junior Gabriella Brooks totaled one save while her counterpart Christy Bishop finished with five.
The Mustangs outshot St. Mary's (Md.) 9-5 and held a 9-7 advantage in penalty corners.
Stevenson returns to action on Tuesday, September 16 when the Mustangs travel to face local rival McDaniel beginning at 7:00 p.m.
