Box Score ASTON, Pa. - Highlighted by four goals from senior Caitlin Dempsey, the Stevenson field hockey team won its third-straight season opener with a 5-3 victory over Neumann at the York College Invitational on Friday.
The Mustangs (1-0) scored five goals for the first time since Sept. 26, 2013 when they posted a 5-1 victory over Immaculata. It is also just the fourth time in the last three seasons that Stevenson has scored at least five goals.
Dempsey became the fourth different player in school history to score at least four goals in a game. The school's single-season leader with 18 goals and 44 points a year ago, she moved into fourth place on the school's career goals list as she now has 30 in just 39 career games. She is also fifth in career points with 70, just two shy of fourth and three short of third.
Dempsey scored three goals in the first half, including the game-winner with less than three minutes remaining to give the Mustangs a 4-1 halftime lead. She totaled 13 of Stevenson's 20 shots in the contest, including seven of nine in the opening half.
Dempsey scored just over eight minutes into the game before senior Alison Kagel added her first of the season and 16th of her career less than nine minutes later as the Mustangs built a 3-0 lead over the first 19:03.
Sophomore Nicole McDiarmid picked up her first career point with an assist on Dempsey's fourth goal of the night with just under 15 minutes to play.
Sophomore Gabriella Brooks made eight saves, including six in the first half, to earn her sixth win as a Mustang.
Stevenson returns to action tomorrow afternoon when it faces Gordon at the York College Invitational beginning at 4:00 p.m.
