Box Score OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Led by 15 points by senior Alfonzo Hawkins and a combined 22 rebounds by junior Justin Kuntz and freshman Darius Walker, the Stevenson men's basketball team defeated Elizabethtown 65-51 in a Commonwealth Conference contest Wednesday night at Owings Mills Gymnasium on Senior Night.
The Mustangs (17-7, 12-5 MAC), who are currently in second place in the conference, are still in the hunt for the top seed. With a win on Saturday and a loss by Messiah, the Mustangs would be the first seed and host the fourth seed on Wednesday, February 26. A win however would ensure a home playoff game for the first time since the 2006-07 season, while a loss would drop them to the third seed.
The Blue Jays (8-16, 5-12 MAC) scored the first points of the night on a three-pointer by Joe Schwalm, but that would be the only lead for Elizabethtown as the Mustangs trailed for just 3:06.
Hawkins scored six of the teams first eight points and would score 11 of his 15 points in the first half of 4-of-8 shooting.
Elizabethtown would tie the game at 19 with 4:54 remaining in the first half but that would be as close at the Blue Jays would get.
Stevenson would push its lead to double digits following a layup by Hawkins with 18:17 remaining in the second half and would eventually lead by as many as 18. The team scored 40 points in the paint while also outrebounding the Blue Jays, 45-38.
In pregame ceremonies, the Mustangs honored seniors Hawkins, Kelly Davis, Jeff Holmes, Stefon McCray and Shaun Nobile who are playing in their final season with the team.
Stevenson will conclude the regular season on Saturday, February 22 when it travels to Lebanon Valley for a Commonwealth Conference contest beginning at 3:00 p.m. The Mustangs defeated the Dutchmen 86-72 on Jan. 11.
