Mustangs Clinch Second-Straight Playoff Spot with an 84-57 Win Over Albright

Box Score

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Led by 21 points from junior Colby Giacubeno and a career-high seven blocks from junior Justin Kuntz, the Stevenson men's basketball team outscored Albright 42-20 in the second half en route to an 84-57 Commonwealth Conference victory Saturday at Owings Mills Gymnasium.

With the win, the Mustangs (16-7, 11-5 MAC) secured a playoff spot in the Commonwealth Conference tournament for the second time in as many years. The team clinched a playoff off spot in its first season in the conference a season ago.

Following a layup by senior Kelly Davis, Stevenson held an 11 point lead with 6:13 remaining. However, a 16-2 run by the Lions (12-11, 8-8), sparked by two three-pointers by Pedro Perez, would give Albright a 37-34 advantage with 1:41 left in the half.

The Mustangs would end the half on an 8-0 run, including six-straight points from Giacubeno, giving themselves a 42-37 lead at the break.

Stevenson would quickly extend its lead back to double digits and not look back as it would eventually hold a 29-point lead.

Senior Stefon McCray chipped in 16 points and added a game-high 11 rebounds. Over the last three games, McCray has averaged 14.7 points per game. Senior Alfonzo Hawkins added 11 points and a game-high seven assists.

The Mustangs, who held a 43-36 rebounding advantage, shot at least 50.0 percent from the floor for the 10th time this season.

Albright was led by Perez who totaled 17 points, seven rebounds and six assists while Kyle Jordan added 11 points and score his 1,000 career point.

Stevenson, who currently sits in second place in the conference, returns to action on Tuesday, February 18 when it hosts Elizabethtown in a Commonwealth Conference contest on senior day. The Mustangs will honor Davis, McCray, Hawkins, Jeff Holmes and Shaun Nobile. Game time is 8:00 p.m.
