Taggart, Alexander Lead Mustangs to Fourth-Straight Win, 5-4 at New England

| Box Score 2

BIDDEFORD, Maine - Stevenson women's ice hockey junior McKenzie Taggart scored on the power play with just 7:38 remaining in the third period while junior Megan Alexander toaled a goal and two assists as the Mustangs edged the University of New England 5-4 Friday at the Harold Alfond Forum.

The win was the fourth-straight for Stevenson (6-2), snapping a three-game losing streak against the Nor'easters. The Mustangs are outscoring their opponents 25-8 during their win streak.

Stevenson scored three of its five goals on the power play, finishing 3-for-8. The team entered the game ranked 14th in the nation with a man advantage, having scored seven goals in seven games. The Mustangs are now 10-for-41 this season for 24.4 percent.

Taggart tallied her second goal of the season and first since a 5-0 victory over Chatham on November 8. It was the 22nd of her career and her first game-winner.

Meanwhile, Alexander extended her point streak to four games, having totaled a goal and five assists during that stretch. Both of her goals this season have come on the power play, including tonight's 5-on-3 opportunity.

After Mary Wirth gave UNE (3-6-1) a a 1-0 lead just 3:20 into the first period, Stevenson answered by scoring the next three to take a 3-1 advantage at the 7:23 mark of the second period.

Six different players all registered a point for the Mustangs during the run, including junior Katie Abbott who scored just 23 second into the second period off an assist from junior Erin McLoughlin. Like Alexander, both extended their point streak to four games with Abbott netting five goals over the last three.

Junior Jessie Capanelli scored for the second-straight game at 7:23 off an assist from junior Madison Lange who finished with two assists for her second multi-point game of the season.

However, the Nor'easters scored two goals in just 1:41 to tie the game at 3-3, the first of which came just 22 seconds after Capanelli.

Junior captain Tori Emoff scored her fourth goal of the season at 16:22 of the second period to give Stevenson a 4-3 lead at the second intermission. She also has a four-game point streak with three goals and two assists.

UNE tied the game for the second time midway through the third period after Gabriella Moscato put home a rebound, but the game remained tied for less than three minutes when Taggart re-directed a shot from the high slot by Emoff at 12:22.

The Mustangs were able to hold its one-goal margin thanks in large part to a brilliant third period by junior Sarah Modzelewski who made 18 shots of her 29 saves in the period as Stevenson was outshot, 19-9.

The two teams conclude their two-game set Saturday at 3:00 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on the Mustang Sports Network beginning at 2:50 p.m. Click here.
