Tarbert Leads Mustangs in a 69-36 Win Over Washington (Md.) in Season Opener

OWINGS MILLS, Md. – Playing in her first game in a Stevenson uniform, sophomore Sara Tarbert totaled 14 points, four assists, three rebounds, three steals and three blocks to lead the Stevenson women's basketball team to a 69-36 win over Washington (Md.) in its season opener Wednesday at Owings Mills Gymnasium.

The Mustangs (1-0), who held the Shorewomen to just six points and two field goals in the second half, improve to 3-1 in season openers under head coach Jackie Boswell. The win was also the first for Stevenson over Washington (Md.) in eight all-time meetings.

Stevenson jumped out to an early 12-2 lead after forcing five turnovers on the Shorewomen's first six possessions. The Mustangs pushed their lead to as many as 17 following a three-pointer by junior Stephanie Martinez to cap an 11-0 run.

However, the Shorewomen (1-2) scored eight-straight points in 54 seconds, led by five points from Raley Hinton before senior Kyarra Harmon converted a layup with one second remaining in the half.

The second half belonged to Stevenson as Washington (Md.) shot just 8.3 percent from the field and scored only two points in the opening 15:52. The Mustangs forced 16 turnovers in the half and totaled 29 points off 29 turnovers in the game.

The Mustangs had 15 steals, including four by senior Ty Bender who also finished with eight points, four assists and a team-high seven rebounds. As a team, the Mustangs totaled 20 assists which ranks ninth all-time in the program's 20-year history.

Joining Tarbert in double figures was Harmon with a game-high 15 and junior Caitlin Roy who added 12. The duo combined for 11 rebounds and three assists. Meanwhile, senior Kayla Kelly added eight points, four assists, two rebounds and one block.

Washington (Md.) was led by the duo of Hinton and Carley Kendall who combined for 21 of the team's 36 points.

Stevenson returns to action on Friday, November 21 when the Mustangs face Bridgewater (Va.) in the Randolph-Macon Tip-Off. Game time is scheduled for 8:00 p.m.
